Odd that one of the entries recommended today is
about strokes (not that I know if that was the cause)...

I was sad too, a heart attack according to the news. Douglas Adams was a part of my youth, listening to THGTTG on radio all those years ago. I remember thinking how different it all was and how at last someone had a sense of humour I could really identify with. I loved his books when I used to read them on holidays, and only recently read some articles he had written. He was such an original thinker and the world will miss him.

Stunned. Shocked. Sad. Speechless.
DA has had a profound impact upon me, and I am sure evryone in this community - and it is overwhelmingly upsetting to learn that he will no longer be around. The joy he has brought to so many should be celebrated - and I hope now that the movie project torch will be picked up and accelerated - it seems the most fitting tribute to this great & creative man.
If any of his friends/family are reading this, then my thoughts are with you. God now has a tremendous asset in heaven. You never know, maybe God will make Doug his "assistant God", so he can at last get his hands on the essence of life, the universe and everything.

I lost a friend yesterday. Like all the best friends, he was an inspiration, an irritation - the grit in the oyster - and an endless source of provocation, ideas and damn good lunches. He had a unique ability to make the inexplicable obvious. And vice versa.
He'll still continue to inspire. I just wish he were around to irritate.
Love and thoughts to Jane and Polly

Utterly gobsmacked. He still had so much to offer. I'd like to start a campaign for a BBC retrospective (if the BBC can find time for anything else apart from self-important politicians at the moment).
I'm not a believer, but if anybody deserved to go to a good place after death it was him, if only because he made the time before it so much more enjoyable for so many people, and cooked a snook at life's seemingly arbitrary indignities. My condolences to his family and friends: their loss may be greater than everyone else's, but we all share it to some degree.

I have so many fond memories of Douglas and his works. His books never failed to generate a big silly grin with each reading. When interviewed on television or radio he always seemed such a genuine, warm man whose endearing silliness never failed to charm and entertain.
My sincere and heartfelt condolances go out to Douglas' friends and family.
Ewan.

I'm so shocked -- I just heard. Now I'm spreading the horrible news.
I'll really miss him - he was such an inspirational guy, as well as
a genius and one of the funniest men on the planet.
Ah well, now he & Graham Chapman can take up their writing
where they left off... *sigh* .
I'll miss you, Dougie.

Doug got me through a school I hated, my first ex girlfriend and countless situations of life confusion.
He's had a big influence on my life and philosophy.
I have and will alway take great comfort in the words Dont Panic.
So Dont Panic.

Son of a B**CH!! What a crock life can be.
I used to lis'en to the radio just to hear
that show.
I remember getting my ASS kicked by my
father for writing "DON'T PANIC!!" under our
doorbell in red permanent marker
We live'd at number 42..I still do.I get a kick
out of it when a friend rings the bell a bit to
long and explains that they arn't
"Panic'ing" they just press'ed the bell "Too Long"
With a legacy like that and a found place in our hearts
he'll will be with us for a long time to come.
My heart goes out to his loved ones at this time.
Words are never enough but time is a healer.

The universe has become a sadder place now. This is a great loss, and we will never see the likes of Doug again. He will be deeply missed by us all. I had to lay down when I heard the news, he was my inspiration and taught me a great deal of good thinking. The world will not be the same place without him.
What a loss..
