The gloom-sayers are forecasting a winter that will be longer, harder, deeper than last year's, when the first Big Dump was on the 28th of November or so and I was shut up at home for a fortnight. So I am putting together a checklist. This matters because Zenadu is 3/4ths of a mile from the nearest gritted road and we don't have a 4x4.
Both cars need:
~ shovels (check)
~ cat litter or sand (add to shopping list)
~ salt (add to shopping list)
~ oatie bars and something to drink (note to self: store in boot of car)
The house needs:
~ oil (check)
~ logs (check)
~ coal (But where to store it? So maybe not...)
~ loo roll (check)
The kitchen cupboard needs:
~ different kinds of flour (Z is a demon bread-baker )
~ different kinds of lentis (parp, parp)
~ dried chickpeas
~ tinned tomatoes
~ tomato puree (for when the tinned tomatoes run out)
~ a variety of tinned beans (for when the oil runs out)
~ different kinds of rice, including LOTs of risotto rice
~ masses of UHT soya milk - you do NOT want to be near me when I have no access to
~ cat food
~ masses of cheap UHT apple juice
The freezer needs
- fruit (for smoothies)
- veg
The biggest concern is fresh greens for the torties. Perhaps I should start growing window-sill lettuces for them.
What's on your winter-shopphing list? (Other seasons are available....)

My son asked for mandarins today. I offered oranges (I haven't seen any mandarins yet), but he doesn't want those. They require actual peeling.
I live in walking distance (about one mile) from a couple of shops, so I don't need to stock up on anything.

Peeling an orange can be fun.

(I also saw an image, similar to the one at the bottom of that page where someone made a orange peel man, but they positioned the "core" advantageously and pulled it out from the orange.)

Are you planning to deep-fry any turkeys this year?

Cat litter sand but no cat food?

Cat food's on the cupboard list. The Sand is to see if your car gets stuck.

If you put leashes on enough cats and hook them up to a stuck car, they could pull it out of the snow.

Yep - the cats go outside. Mind you, the snow was 17" deep last year. I'm not sure they could find somewhere otuside for their pitstops in those circumstances.

My cant doesn't want to go outside in winter anymore. When she was young she was jumping through the snow like abunny but now she tries to keep her paws warm. She usually comes inside to the litter for her 'pitstop' anyhow, seems to be uncomfortable to do it outside. Especially if it's cold.

I think pullover was the wrong word. I can't take anything out of wool of any kind. Must be cotton. I also didn't do any knitting since elementary school.
