Hi all,
As some of you will know, Old Hairy has been battling with cancer for some time now. We regret to say that yesterday we received an email from his wife to let us know that sadly he lost that battle recently.
With his wife's permission we're posting this thread on his Personal Space to let his h2g2 friends know of this tragic loss. We're sure you'd like to join us in passing on our condolence to Old Hairy's family and real-life friends.

Sorry to hear of Old Hairy's death . He helped me to remember most of my long-unused undergraduate course in Logic . Whether this has benefitted me greatly is hard to say
He was an example to other researchers of how to give and receive criticism without offence - not always as easy as it sounds.

We had a few interactions in hootoo (He helped me out with some GuideML questions). I admired the straightforward, concise and logical way he explained things.

Gnomon - time to move on Posted Nov 25, 2004
Old Hairy and I rarely agreed on anything. We each picked holes in the other's entries, and both ended up being better as a result.
We'll miss you.

Felonious Monk - h2g2s very own Bogeyman Posted Nov 25, 2004
A terrible shame. I always liked OH's contributions to the PR threads. I'm sure that his work for hootoo stands as a fitting monument to the man for us hootooers, although I'm sure that his family will have many other memories to cherish.
We'll miss you, OH

My condolences also. I spoke with him on hootoo only on occasion but his logic and eloquence always stood out in my mind.

This is indeed sad news. I too offer my condolences to his family and friends
I shall miss OH and his pithy contributions to Peer Review. He was always someone who was worth listening to at all times.
