h2g2 The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy: Earth Edition

Tomorrow, at 19:30, I stride on to the stage... or rather I will shakily get on the stage and face an audience of 250 work colleagues.

I am doing something I have never done before... Playing in front of a large crowd naked!

By that I mean unaccompanied... Not NUDE!

I am competing against six female singers using backing tracks, and one singer who has a two piece band.

Me? I have my electric fiddle, Vera II (after Vera Lynn or violin, depending on pronunciation) and the tunes should be, time allowing, Humouresque - Dvorak (Classical), Five Foot Two, eyes oOf Blue (Jazzish) and trumpet hornpipe (trad. aka Captain Pugwash)

Outfit? That will depend on the weather. Ideally full 1930's serge tail coat, black trousers, bootlace tie, with dancers fixing and boater, with double-cuff shirt and fiddle cufflinks.

If it is too hot, then it will be my Father's waistcoat (hand embroidered by his mother with dancers' motifs) and balance as above but with selftie bow tie. It is meant to be a fusion of Folk and Classical.

I have four minutes playing time, and go on first... so here's hoping.

The main thing is it is in aid of an anti-bullying organisation, and will be fun.

I think I like the second ensemble best if this weather holds, and an embroidered waistcoat will add something special to the performance.

Well, actually I quite liked the first suggestion but we don't want them storming the stage, at least not till after you've played.

I like the sound of the music, or I would do if I could hear it. Good lively mix.

Like I told you earlier just get out there and enjoy it. At least if you are on first you won't have to go through agonies of waiting.

Thank you for your support one and all. I've tried to pick a medley that is familiar, as I know nothing about 'Pop' Music... ( I sound like a parent!!!) and I've had suggestions of ELO, Duelling Banjos, Charlie Daniels Band- Devil went down to Georgia, Joe Ungar Ashokan Farewell, but I've decided to go with tried and tested and the proof will be in the playing, and swaying 250 people into believing I know what I'm doing...
