When are we going to learn how to live with snow in the UK?

OK, the bad stuff does not happen all over the country every year....But each year, one area or another gets it, ant we STILL can't cope.

Does no-one think of contingency plans any more???

alot of that one comes from teachers not living near the school any more, my school provides accomdation for lots of our teachers though, unfortunataly, so i dont get school off smiley - wah

But on the smiley - bleepin H&S front, a pub in glasgow has said that parents have to accompany their children to the toilet...up to the age 16.

Now they say this is to protect their license..has anyone questioned the previous system? Ever? Not till now smiley - grr

2legs - Hey, babe, take a walk on the wild side...

Its pitiful. Each year (and I remember this quite clearly still from last year), the councils come out and say they've done what they could... like balls... We're ment* to be a country, so I can't imagine why we can't have additional stors of say the rock salt/grit centrally for distrubution to local councils to be an addition to their own reserves; the stuff doesn't 'go off' or 'go out of date' so I can't see there arguements each year fo saying 'oh we couldn't buy more rocks salt as people wouldn't like us having to reduce funding to schools/services'.

Ever notice how there is never* a shortage of money when it comes to sending troops overseas to die, only when its involving sums far far smaller spent on our own shores that suddenly the cost becomes an issue smiley - headhurts

Twenty years ago the road I'm on here at my Dad's was* gritted every* year, ten years ago my road in Cambridge was gritted every winter also, and* used to be road swept every*day over the summer months... neither happens anymore in either location smiley - huhsmiley - erm

'Backwards' is the new 'development' apparently; just look at how govvernment seems hell-bent on undoing 150 years of development and improvement in public waste disposal in order to err dunno really can't figure out waht they think they're going to achieve by it cept for getting few extra votes from tree hugging hippies perhaps...;
if our council in cambridge hadn't wasted such huge sums of money on ammunitions for our local police (why the bleep do they need so much?), and the failed and soon to be scrapped and replaced recycling system, they could have spent the money on doing something useful smiley - headhurts
Actually if they still gritted the main road near here, and this hill I'm on, I could have gotten home by now; trains are manging to run, but I can't get to the station smiley - headhurtssmiley - doh

the old trains had brake shoes that pressed onto the wheels so as the breakes were applyed it cleaned the wheel as well

modern trains have disc brakes, which despite being more efficent, allow stuff to build up on the wheels, like snow or fallen leaves, so when the brakes are applied a film can build up between the wheel and the track, reducing friction and making the train slide along uncontrollably, then the reverse happens when they try to get going again, theres no friction and the train don't move
