I was with a friend in France once, hiking. We couldn't for the life of us figure out why our return rail tickets had "OZAUG" on them. Sounded good, mind you.

Until we realised that it was 02 AUG - the date of our return

To this day, I use OZAUG as a word I mutter when I need some emphasis...

The coast of what is now Turkey was called Ionia. The people were a mixture of Christians and Muslims, some speaking Greek and some speaking Turkish. After the war between Turkey and Greece, an arrangement was made between the two countries whereby the Christians would leave Turkey and go to Greece, while the Muslims would leave Greece and go to Turkey. As a result many Christian Turks who didn't speak any Greek, suddenly arrived in Greece and vice versa.

You won't have much of a rest, by the sound of it, with so many trips planned.

My memories of Turkey are mainly that everything tasted of sesame and that distances were huge. Everything was miles from everything else, along very bad roads. I think we just managed Pamukkale, Izmir and Bodrum - everything else was simply too far away to incorporate in a week's holiday (plus which, we had all three children with us). We were staying a few km from Bodrum.

My husband has since been to the main sights of Troy, Ephesus etc, but with an organised group (a special offer for teachers of the classics). It really does have a lot to offer, with all those famous place names.
