My PC is too PC!!!!...
Loup Dargent Started conversation Jul 20, 2003
here is the problem:
got on the net without any hassle [] and i'm very happy about it... but....
i noticed that there were words i couldn't see and couldn't post either...
for example, when i tried to say that i hated something the word hate didn't appear in preview...
even worse, "strange essex stories" became "strange es"..
i went throught the content control.. and even disabled it but it's still happening..
something i should know about?! [or do even..]...
i have the feeling that it has to do with one of the norton programs/softwares but where on earth could i find the command?!.. in "system"?!.. or "temp"?!... i'm so ing i would re-format the darn hardrive if i had all the programs handy to re-install..
what i can't understand is that some other stuff more naughty that "i hate something" was downloaded without any problem by the previous owner...
have i triggered something when i installed the blueyounder net thingy?!...
the thing is that if i update an entry and that some words can't be posted because the software "thinks" it's naughty i'm going to have a very limited vocabulary..
anyone got a clue on how to solve that problem?!...
in advance...
a very puzzled and frustrated loup

loup all i can say is go back to the shop owner and explain your problem. your pc should be under guarantee.
loup please come to the bar, i have sent an email to you and a message on your page.

loup with many goods the shop should be able to solve the problem ie repair it or give you an alternative one.

loup it sounds like you have a bug in the software. do you have an anti-virus software installed?
kat
My PC is too PC!!!!...
Loup Dargent Posted Jul 20, 2003
kat... i've got the anti-virus installed and all the protection software needed installed but that problem has to do with a filtering program and only appeared after i've installed the blueyounder thingy [i think...]... it has to do with this protection thing to make sure that kids won't see/read/post things they shouldn't on the net... but that's pushing it a bit...
i've just noticed that as i added something on my space earlier on, the word "adult" disappeared from my plug to my "barrier to learning for adults.." entry..
where will that stop?!...
i have to find a way of re-setting whatever program is controling that... i thought i did when i re-set the security level control but somehow nothing has changed... quite a puzzler that...
might re-install the blueyounder disk and read the instructions this time... we never know..
can't stay much on here at the mo'... but will be back <./>online</.> on a more regular basis soon...
talk soon everyone....

loup have you asked the shop about the problem. i hope you will be able to sort the problem out by re-installing blueyonder. i always find that the more complicated the machine is, the more things can go wrong.
hi sef.

Hi Kat.
I sometimes think things go wrong on purpose - like they are picking on people.
Loup seems to have given up for now. I don't think it will be Norton anti-virus. They are (or used to be) a sane company.
I'm not so sure about blueyonder...

sef i still think the best option is to go back to the shop. i have learnt quite a bit about the consumer act when i was doing business admin. as loup has recently bought it even though it is second hand/sale item it is still protected by the consumer act which states that purchases have to be in working order. it should be under guarantee which means that the shop can get it repaired.

Hi Loup
I used to have Blueyonder. Somewhere on the install disk is an option to install online Blueyonder help. It's a bit like MSN. You post in the problem and one of the tech guys comes online and talks you through the problem and the solution. It works well.

Loup Dargent Posted Jul 21, 2003
peta...
will do that as soon as possible...
it definitely has to do with the settings for the content control in internet explorer... the version in the blueyonder disk is newer than the one installed before so i might not be the only one having this problem... it sure makes it safe when surfing the net but darn ennoying when wanting to communicate/post...
... on my way to install the online help thingy..
talk later everyone....

Hi loup
If you are useing IE
go to "TOOL" and then "INTERNET OPTIONS"
and the "CONTENT"
and you should be able to remove the "Content Adviser"
I hope this works as I am just of to w**k now

hi manda...
i tried to disable the content thingy in internet options after i noticed [eventually] that while i'd done it in properties it didn't change it in there but that didn't stop it either...
i will still follow peta's advice but i kinda reckon i will have to re-install the blueyonder disk on the 23rd as i remember that something was said about _not_ installing the software until that date as there could be some problems... perhaps not being able to set controls etc is one of them... the account would be fully working then if i understand well... might be the reason a few things are not running smoothly yet...
worth a try... until then i'm kinda limited in my surfing activities but at least i can post links and watch the collective sites music/video clips [
] among other things, so it's not too bad...
i just won't touch any entries until then in case the auto-censorship from my PC/software gets into action full blast again...
talk soon everyone...
for the advices...

loup i am glad things are going to sort themselves out soon. i remember having to learn something similar when i was doing my business admin course - (computers). i would have to read books and magazines all giving advice and guidance to deal with similar problems. i have forgetton it all know. enven though i was doing business admin i still had to learn about all the different types of software/applications and how to deal with pc problems.

1. Have a look at programs are running in the Task list. Anything like net nanny? Or anything that gives a clue by it's name?
2. Download a different browser ie Netscape, see if it's a consistant problem between browsers, not just Explorer.
3. If you send yourself an e-mail with such words as 'adult' do they vanish, or is it only when looking at web sites?

SEF Posted Jul 22, 2003
It seems a bit daft to filter out the word "adult" anyway. The BBC (and presumably other child-friendly sites) have warnings up saying things like "if someone upsets you then tell an adult you trust".
I spoke to a tech support person at the weekend who had occasionally encountered this sort of thing whereas I hadn't seen it at all. It matters which version of Windows you are using (assuming you are) because the settings are in different places on each.

Loup Dargent Posted Jul 22, 2003
hi everyone...
this thing is driving me mad....
from what i've learned the content control is always set to the most "conservative" setting to start with... that's pushing the meaning of that word very further than expected...
i can't use words like "ad*lt" or search anything with "ad*lt" in it... of course any variations around the word "s*x " is impossible... like for "strange Ess*x stories"...
oh and "n*ughty" is not accepted either...
etc.. etc.. if i had't starred these words out they would not have appeared....
hopefully once i've re-installed the blueyonder disk tomorrow things will be a bit better...
kinda funny in a way but very frustrating as i can't touch any entry in case some words disappear... also, i can't see these words when i read entries and postings so it makes it rather difficult to enjoy the site...
oh yeah another word that can't appear because of this insane system: "c*cktail"....
whoever programmed this control thingy must have a very twisted mind...
jab... i will try to email myself a message and see what's happening...
does it make any difference the fact that i've marked the BBC sites as approved/safe sites?!... maybe the control thingy thinks that these words should not appear on a trusted site....
oh yeah i managed to find one file with filtered words... which i duly erased... but unfortunately it was not the words being filtered at the mo'... that would have helped if it had been...
my system is windows 95.. which also means that i can't download explorer 6 from the microsoft site...
anyway... hopefully some good news tomorrow...
talk soon...
loup
