Rhythm & Blues was a development of blues originated (correct me if I'm wrong, please) by black musicians such as Muddy Waters & Howling Wolf. The Rolling Stones (& others) copied this style & thereby tapped the white audience. What they played was pretty good, though.
Since this early R&B was one of the roots of rock & roll, & had much in common with rock & roll, I don't see how we can reject it.
Modern r'n'b may be something quite different. I don't see much similarity between Mis-Teeq and R&B myself.
I do remember Black Sabbath's first hit, Paranoid, which was in 1970. I wouldn't have been able to say anything about their previous history, however.

thanx for that thought Id got it wrong for a bit but it is fairly obvious from the discussions that actually categorising rnb in light of how it used now is very difficult. Still thats what drunk conversations in the pub are all about.

i quote an expert on (proper)rnb, my dad:
"the rolling stones are the best rhythm and blues band in the world."
well if my dad says so, then it must be. anyhow, they play damn fine rock!

The Stones were all fine musicians. I would call them a great band but, apart from their early stuff (Little Red Rooster etc.), I would not call them an R&B band. In my view, they were the main movers in the transition from R&B to Rock (or Heavy Rock, later Heavy Metal).
Of course, it's impossible to draw sharp distinctions between the stages of anything which evolved continuously. Someone (to my shame, I forget who, but I'm sure someone will reming me) once said "it's all rock & roll to me."
