And, of course, spending money automatically makes you a great team, doesn't it? (Liverpool, Leeds, Fulham, Middlesbrough)

But Liverpool paid Everton good money for Abel Xavier.....

"otherwise poor history"
I think that, with the exception of Arsenal, man Utd and Liverpool, Everton may be the most successful football club in england.
Poor history my a*se

Everton are officially the third most consistently placed side in English football (ahead of Manchester United, and just behind Liverpool, with Arsenal at the top). We were the third team for the most trophies as well until the 90's. Remind me how many clubs are there again.....? to be honest I think these guys are talking a load of dogs b*ll*cks, and are just trying to wind us up. I could say more but I think I'll wait to the end of the season first.

I did start doing a spot of research on trophies won by enghlish teams earlier, but got terminally bored.
But league titles the top four were, I think:
Liverpool 18
Man U 14
Arsenal 12
Everton 9
and overall trophies (only counting FAC, League, EC, ECWC and UEFA) was Liverpool 32, Mancs and Arse 20-odd, Us 15, which I think shows that our "poor history" is in fact, one of the four best in the history of English football.

I think it is interesting that at the copnversation here - A443206 (entitled please), he agrees with Tom, who says that Liverpool are a joke, and suggests some how a team below us (namely the afore mentioned Liverpool) should be our target. Oh and another point, I think he would be interested to look at the crime rate figures as well, which if I'm not mistaken suggest that your more likely to get your hub caps nicked if you live in Manchester, where as Liverpool now has one of the lower crime rates.

Mu Beta Posted Feb 3, 2003
Interesting comparison - has anyone ever tried comparing success of football teams to local crime rate?
Hang on, if that were true, then Scunthorpe would be in the Champions League...

To give you an idea of the lengths people will go to. About a year ago one of the papers sent their reporters to every Premiership ground to pick up empty ciggie packets after the game. Apparantly Goodison had the highest percentage of packets brought in from abroad. Now that's what you call campaigning journalism!

Well, Liverpool is one of the biggest docks in the country. I think I could've made an educated guess myself.
Were Liverpool, Portsmouth, Middlesbrough and Grimsby next, by any chance?

I think it was The Hammers.

oh shut up. What have you won in the last 10 years?!
You are all living in the past. I watch sky sports, not the history channel.

What have we won in the last ten years? The FA Cup.

Terran Posted Feb 5, 2003
Ah the wonderful 94/95 season, and our two cup haul (don't for get the Charity Sheild , most people do
). To be fair only a handfull have done any better in the 90's.
Would you prefer that we hadn't won any trophies at all?
Just out of curiousity where are you from Tom?

egon Posted Feb 5, 2003
So, Tom, in your opinion what matters is only the last 10 years? And the fact that Everton were (lets not beat about the bush here) pretty bloody awful for most of them, means we're never going to be good? Every team's periods of success go in peaks and troughs- the 80s was dominated by Liverpool, Everton and, right at the end, Arsenal, the 90s by Man U and Arsenal. Who can say which teams going to dominate next? if you had said when Ferguson first took over at MAn U that by the end of the century they would be the dominant force in English football, you'd have been laughed at. There was football before the Premier League, you know.
you'll never really be good though
Terran Posted Feb 5, 2003
Ah but Man Utd fans don't like to be reminded that they were once awful and only had their past to cling on to.
you'll never really be good though
egon Posted Feb 5, 2003
I do like the fact that man Utd fans say that Everton saying we were great in the 80s is "clinging to the past" while them going on about the 90s isn't. If you're going to say that past performance isn't important, just judge by the current season.
