A pink dessert that doesn't look much like dessert until you put whipped cream on?

it should be added that it is very popular in the type of eating establishments you find in state run institutions (schools, prisons, hospitals etc...)

Blancmange (spelt properly for the sake of the confused)) is a dessert made from milk, which is flavoured, sweetened and thickened either with starch (usually cornflour) or with gelatine. The hot mixture is poured into a wetted mould to set and is turned out before serving.
Serves 4
Milk - 600 ml (1 pint)
Cornflour - 4 tbsp
Sugar - 50g (2 oz)
Lemon rind - a thin strip
METHOD
1. Take three-quarters of the milk, add the lemon rind (or other flavouring) and bring slowly to the boil. Mix the cornflour and sugar to a smooth paste with the remaining cold milk and strain the boiling milk onto the paste, stirring well.
2. Return the mixture to the saucepan, stir and boil for 5 minutes. Then pour into a wetted mould. Turn out when set and serve with fruit or jam and cream.
(for pink use a red fruit instead of a lemon )
Hope that helps

I just remember some gross thing at school that was pink whipped topping on cherry-like jello. I never touched it.

Well that's a new one for my list! Sounds like someone just used up all the dessert leftovers and gave it a fancy name!
