BOO!
Hi, think we (Jab & kow) may hav it sussed...
1. Person on a PC creates an account, using dummy info...
Pasword: 1234567
Question : Who parped
Answer : It was me
DOB : 01 01 1901
Then on the next bit, put the e-mail address of the DIGIBOX user
When the BBC send out an e-mail for confirm of address. DO NOT RESPOND to it, don't repy, or forward it back!
Within it, there is an URL, which needs to be change into a clickable link (called an anchor)
This is done by putting:
Signon
If your not sure, send it to the PC freind to do?
Next, when you have sent this mail back to yourself NOT the BBC...
Click the link, then on the right hand side, click "Retrive details"
Edit your correct information, and save and exit.
Then you will be able to return to surfing h2g2!
There is a butto "Return to h2g2" - It does not work, you will have to got and enter your password, even the next time you wish to log in.
It'aint pretty, it's a mess, and you end up with anothe account, but until the bugs are sorted by the BBC, it works.

Its the JavaScript that doesn't seem to work with old software. People using the link in the confirmation email have said they can click on the link to get to the acknowledged screen but the "click here to go to h2g2" button won't work. You also need to be able to migrate your account to get a email sent in the first place but that uses JavaScript too.

There's a lot of information in the posts above so they'll need to be read carefully.
In summary:
Use a different email address from the one that used to be in your preferences under the old system.
Make migration the first thing you do after switching on to maximise memory.
Make a magic link from the address in the confirmation email.
If your Telewest is old you may have to face the fact that you'll have to do the migration on a PC.

Ah, thanks Kill Jim.
It's almost certainly possible to rewrite the pages with less javascript. It's not that the pages are buggy - they work fine but they're too clever for their own good . We need to start a campaign for digibox-friendly pages.
At least those with later versions of telewest should now be able to complete the process.

Another thought - if kow can go back to a PC and *change* her email address it will generate a new confirmation email with a link she can use to get back into her old account.

Amy,
I am just catching up on my posts and everywhere i have seen you offering sound advice and you really seem to have got to grips with the problems people are having and the specific glitch they are referring too. I am in total admiration of you.
The bad news is that i will be sending people to ask for your advice for the coming weeks

I've posted the link to this thread in the LDers Advice corner.
Amy: I've emailed [email protected] and requested a confirmation email for my other account, so I'll see what happens with that first.

Kill Jim was the dummy *long pause* name used to create this log-in Signon...
I'll change my nickname from Kill Jim [Jab SSO edition] to Jab [SSO edition]
Somthing to note, the nickname does not have to be the same as the signon name anyway.
Oh and you end up with lots of mail from the BBC about confirming you e-mai addy, ignore it. Just go to the enter password section, it allows you back to surf, even if the 'proper' button on the first page does not.

Its what everyone on the old software gets. Unless someone on a PC can update his account and get a confirmation email sent to his account then there's not much else he can do. Except for opening a new account.

If someone migrates their account on a PC but has a remember-me cookie on the digibox, it is possible that this prevents them from receiving the new one to login on the digibox. Even if they mind-wipe the digibox using the special power-off procedure, it could still be the case that they can't do some part of the login from a digibox (due to large page size, links or javascript).
Note that there are probably ongoing problems at the BBC database end which complicate the various things people see. Technical fault screens are almost certainly of this type rather than being a digibox problem.
Previously having replied to the BBC email should be significant as could version of digibox software (and hardware?). People who have already acknowledged an email address (including PC people) don't seem to be getting a confirmation email again.
We need to collect the reports of as many digibox users as possible and check through the various options to work out a consistent set of successes and failures. This is likely to be made more difficult by people not reliably remembering whether or not they replied to an email before (or even whether they saved the cookie before).

PC user..
on this account i got no confirmation email but i did do it before (when it was optional)
on another account i had to reply to the confirmation email and i can't remember if i did or not, in the past. I suspect i didn't which ties in with what you have said SEF
But i think you are right, it is a good idea to collate the digibox problems and see where peoples problems are.

Hello Wild-Biriyani.
Did you previously not have to login (ie saved remember-me cookie)?
Had you previously replied to an email for the old account?
Were you mostly getting "technical fault" or blank screens?
What version of digibox (if any) and software are you using?
Key: Complain about this post
