My combination of login name and password, faithfully recorded in a book, meets a stone wall on fb.

Can you request a new one?

I requested and set a new password which gets me in OK. However it is the "Sign Up" button that caused my problem. If I do that (which I now can with my new password, I find myself redirected to h2g2 itself, not (as I expected) signed-up in the facebook page. It would appear that I can post there anyway, without any signing in.

Just a bit confusing. Perhaps the "Sign Up" button should say "Sign up to h2g2" so that cautious customers like me won't think they need to do it in order to continue on the fb page.

I added the button when Facebook introduced the feature, and I've checked it just now.

Unfortunately, it doesn't give me the option to change the text on the button, but it does get some results - people who use Facebook Groups a lot might know what it means in general so they are happy to click it.

I presume you have Liked the page on Facebook, and allowed Notifications, and that is all you need to do over there to see what the Comms Team post

New problem: I can't log in here from my computer. Writing this on my phone. My login name and new password (which got me in last time) are not accepted. The login name is my email address, not my username. Which also is rejected, I tried. Was sent around the capcha pictures many times over. Annoying.

The reason I had to login anew on the pooter is that I had cleared my cookies. No complaint about that, only that I can't get back in.

Glad you're able to get on to h2g2 using your phone, but that is annoying that you can't log in now you've cleared the cookies...

Thank you SashaQ. I took your advice and emailed the mods. While waiting for a reply I tried several alternative strategies over the last four days.

Success! I have finally managed to get past the gatekeepers. The wheeze was to use the old password that I had replaced. Don't know why it worked, but I suppose you never do, really.
