Took me a while but I think it's finished now. What does anyone think?

WanderingAlbatross - Wing-tipping down the rollers of life's ocean.

Excellent piece that reads well and is informative. Well done.

Thank you!

I was a little thoughtful about the end though. Do you think I should add a concluding paragraph?

A quick skim (sorry, trying to do ten things at once) but looks good to mesmiley - ok

My brother (born 1948) had a model train set, he displayed the track all around his bedroom - his trains were the Flying Scotsman; the Sir Nigel Gresley and a Duchess *thinks hard* something.smiley - erm
I'll remember it later, when I'm trying not to think of itsmiley - winkeye

I even saw the Duchess "something" when I visited York Railway Museum with my then-partner my son's Dad and my older children, in the summer of 1993. My brother's jaw hit the floor when I told him I'd been on the station next to the real thing.smiley - laugh

Great entry Galigansmiley - applause

Thanks GB. I have a model Flying Scotsman myself actually, and a Mallard. Great little machines. This Duchess, was it Duchess of Hamilton perchance? That's one I've heard of becuase they're re-streamlining it at the moment.

WanderingAlbatross - Wing-tipping down the rollers of life's ocean.

A suggestion, if you worried about the ending, might be to move the

"She continued in full service until 1963 when she was finally withdrawn having completed some 2,076,000 miles."

to the final paragraph hence closing out both the locomotive and the train.

Although that's not the end of the Locomotive section I see where you're coming from. I'll have a looksee but if it doesn't really fit the final footnote about the time change seems a good light hearted way to finish. I was just wondering if anyone thought I needed a *lot* more stuff at the end.

Ok, I worked the locomotive into the final paragraph a bit. What do you think?

Thanks Matt.smiley - ok

Incidently, do you remember a while ago I said I had an idea for an h2g2 University project? Well it was going to be about famous trains with this as part of it but I decided to put it in separately because I couldn't think of enough famous trains to do for it. Got 3 so far which are all in PR now though.smiley - biggrin

Hmm, you interest me strangely Mr, er, Matt.smiley - winkeye Do you think it would be a good idea to pull the three I've got now, do Rocket and maybe Green Arrow (which I'm looking at now anyway) and re-submitt them as a Uni project?

A9955993 - The Flying Scotsman

Post 14

U168592

Weeellll....

Here's the thing. Uni Projects don't tend to get their own blobs and I really think the Flying Scotsman deserves one (but now I've said that it probably won't get one).

Plus it all goes a bit backwards and forwards if you put em in - take em out and shake em all about. Plus, if you're doing Rocket and Arrow, I may be inclined to help out. Maybe. smiley - winkeye

yeay, another train entry smiley - smiley

some notes ---

>>John G. Robinson was the LNER's first choice as CME --> what is CME ?

we only link to entries that are already in the edited guide, therefore you should remove the link to the mallard entry. When this and the mallard entry get picked the editors creat duplicate entries and these duplicates are the ones that go into the edited guide. Therefore the current link will not link to the edited guide entry. Don't worry, whenthese entries are picked and being subbed / going through the final stages before they hit the front page, somebody will put in the links

Doesn't Pete Waterman own the Flying Scotsman ? I know that he did at one point, and I have seen recent clips of him in it

Slight quible - were the GWR really the West Cost rivals to the LNER ? They never operated in the same areas. The major west coast rival was the LMS which operated the west coast line to scotland.

Notes that in the Thomas the Tank engine stories, Gordon turned out to be an A1 and the Scotsman was his brother

Weeeelll, there's always exceptions. If we get an artist to help with a Uni project we could get blobs for all of them!

But even if they're not together in a Uni project the ones so far all have links to the others, plus Green arrow links in nicely with Scotsman and Mallard anyway.

I've just started on Green Arrow and as long as I'm not given any actual work to do before 5.15 today I may get a draft done.

Post 17

Sorry Jon, didn't see you there. Here's my reply.

CME is Chief Mechanical Engineer. It says that above somewhere but I was worried that people wouldn't connect the two so I might add another footnote, or even avoid laziness and write out the whole title.smiley - winkeye

As for the links, I suspected that would happen but the links were there so the scouts would know the entries existed in the pre-edited stage, so when they're all done they can all be linked.

smiley - doh Forgot Pete Waterman. I have a whole book about Scotsman but I left it at school I think so I missed that point. Shame really because that book had loads about Mallard and Green Arrow too.

Hold on, I think I've just caught myself out a bit. LMS were the main rivals, granted, but the castle class were GWR. That section needs another looking at then.smiley - erm

The gordon point I will add as a footnote, and there's even a website I know that has Gordon and how he's related to Scotsman. I'll link it in the footnote.

Links are the chains of human bondage my good fellow.

Well, actually they're not, but I'd stick with the individual Entries.

It has been known that like Entries that have run through PR get put into a Uni Project during the final Editing stage (the Mahler Entries and Star Trek come to mind) though, so don't count your smiley - chicksmiley - winkeye

No proba Matt.

Jon, Where was the bit about GWR being the main rivals? I have referances to both in there but I don't think I call either the main rival, apart from the footnote in the train section that I just changed to say 'rival company LMS' rather than just LMS.

Also CME I'm going to leave for the sub to decide, and as for Pete Waterman, I can't find any net referances to him owning it. I thought he did but I can't be sure.smiley - erm

>>The 'no' came when the A1 was tested against the west coast rival, the GWR Castle class

this suggests that LNER and GWR were in direct competition

.
as for waterman, I think he was part owner with Alpine
