OK I’ve done my homework now
The so called "Crank" lights are better known as Dynamo lights, but appon looking at these types of non-battery lights magnetic shake lights seams to be the best. They can be found at
http://www.foreverflashlights.com
Best of all (WARNING Sarcasm detector critical) I found solar flashlights. Usualy I find the sun sufficient.
As for the de-icer, I have seen washer fluid labled and marketed as helping in removing ice from the windshield, but I have never used them my self. I am not usually so lazy as to not use my scraper. As it is warm weather now I can't go double check but I usually see this stuff at AutoZone or AutoParts (or any other chain car outlets)
I've never had occasion to eat an MRE but I have also heard they they don't usually taste the greatest, but in times of need
Your friendly neighborhood

anhaga - i realize footnote 7 is pointless, i didn't include it for any serious reason. while searching for other articles on snow and survival and anything else remotely related to use for links i came across the entry on how to build a snow shelter and wanted to try to fit it into the entry. while the chances of the information ever being used are too remote to mention, it gives a little added press to an entry that might otherwise not be noticed
i hadn't thought of waterproof matches or candles tho. i'll definitely get them in there. thanks!
agent x - thanks for the info on the flashlights. i'll mention that non-battery lights are available, but probably won't get away with including the link.
i'll also mention the de-icer fluid, and i'll probably be looking for some this winter. while i'm not too lazy to scrape the windows off, i do have to leave for work at 4:30 in the morning (and i'm usually running late) so the less time spent out in the cold in the dark scraping windows the better . if i find some i'll report back on how well it works.

i can't believe i forgot all about snow tires!!
so i've added a few lines about the snow tires... i've updated the researcher list to include everyone who's made a contribution (thanks!)...

It looks really good.
If there's anything else to add (not that I can think of anything), maybe someone will come up with it during peer review.

i was going to wait over the weekend and put it in on monday, but i've had second thoughts. if i put it in tonight it can gather comments over the weekend and i can see how well it fared when i'm back online next week.
i'll go move it now, then post a link to the pr thread for anyone who's interested in following along.

Good idea - even though there's not too many people on hootoo over the weekend, you should be able to get some reaction to it.
