Ah well that would be why I didn't get it - I don't think I've ever heard of her!!
Anyway, here's my next quote:
"Forgive your enemies, but never forget their names."

Well, the first thing that comes to mind when you say melabcholy poet is Poe, even though I don't think he was a poet. (In fact I'm pretty sure he wasn't a poet-I've read most of his collected short stories)
But I'll guess Poe anyways. Better than having no guess at all.

Good guess but it's not Poe.
Another clue?
He was a womaniser (but weren't so many of them!) and was born 21 years before Poe

I thought that Poe was a poet. Didn't he write The Raven?
Still no clue on the quote though!! Not very good on poets really....

Oh dear, perhaps that last clue didn't help much. Maybe this will help...

Okay then, what about this?
"Be what you would seem to be - or if you'd like it put more simply - Never imagine yourself not to be otherwise than what it might appear to others that what you were or might have been was not otherwise than what you had been would have appeared to them to be otherwise"

I know - it doesn't actually make sense! That's why I like this quote, it amuses me!
But the question is - who said it? Actually, to be more accurate (and this may or may not be a clue!) the question is - where is this quote from?

It sounds an awful lot like DNA, but I can't think that I've ever heard it before and I've read most of his stuff. But if pressed I would make something up and say from Salmon of Doubt as an exerpt from some speech he made somewhere, maybe a commencement speech (although I don't remeber if he's given any)
But watch as it's not DNA after all.
