Cold but clear at 1 am 22 Dec. Got the newt onto zeta Tauri and finally located M1 alongside. Very faint and indistinct but there nevertheless. Great! a first time view.

Yup. I'm really pleased with that one. I've often looked for it with the binnies before I got the 'scope but was never able to see it.

One thing I notice after this marathon, is that no matter how difficult these objects are to spot initially, it's always easier to go back to them again once they're found.

The biggest trouble for me is that there's always too much stray light around. I've found a couple of 'local' astronomy clubs and I may take a wander down to them to see if they have any dark spot viewing places. Or I might try seeking out someplace out in the sticks myself.

All the best
A.M.
