Hi Galigan,
I don't know if anyone still services this page - I haven't seen Mr Bacchus post for a while. People occasionally post maths problems here, as you may have seen.
While we wait, tell us a little about your maths interest/level. I'm about 1/3 of the way through an OU course - just finished the 2nd level pure maths - next year it's mathematical modelling.

I'm doing A level at the moment, pure maths 3 and 4. The best bit I thought was Mechanics though. Also I'm in the school maths society, though that's a bit of a cop out because we only really listen for 10 minutes and then go and eat biscuits for 20. I like maths though because I get it, which is probably why other people don't.

Do mathematicians eat the biscuits, or do they discuss the geometry of them, and arrange them into groups?
Good luck with the A-level. I took two: got an A-grade in one, and failed the other (such is life). Are you looking to take it to degree level? One of my cousins is doing maths at Leeds (and having a great time, by all accounts).

No, we eat them. It always gets a bit ugly though when people fight over the pink wafers. They don't have then anymore though.
Thanks, but how did you take 2? Was it Maths and Further Maths? No I was actually thinking Law at degree level.

Maths and Further, correct. My nephew's reading Law in Portsmouth. I think you need a big book budget for that one. Good luck with it.

Hi SW, and in the continued absence of the host, welcome to the RMG
It's been a bit quiet lately, but people occasionally post problems.
I try to alert the group (in the thrread for that purpose) when a maths-related entry is submitted to Peer Review, so we can all descend en-masse and pick holes in it.
So, what brought you here?

Hi Happy Nerd, and welcome to the Maths Group.
With a name like that, you've come to the right place!
So, first things first, what's your interest/level in maths?
(My life history's in the earlier posts on this thread)

Hi Icy,
>>>> So, first things first, what's your interest/level in maths?
I have a couple of degrees in math, so I guess you could say I'm an advanced beginner. I like puzzles, geometry, Bayesian statistics, math modelling, computationally intense methods such as bootstrapping and monte carlo methods, that sort of thing.

Sounds interesting.
We're always on the lookout for h2g2 Guide Entries on maths topics (I've written a few in recent months). Obviously, they need to be understandable to the layman. If you're interested and need any assistance with the writing/reviewing process then let me know, and I'll do my best to help.
One benefit to having your article published here is that it will always appear high up in a Google search.

Thanks, Icy.
Okay, I've subscribed to the next thread so I can keep a look out for new entries, and I've started a math modelling entry.

Yes please, I feel a bit groggy at the moment and can't think of a quirky reason to put here.
Thanks

NotaFBene Posted Mar 20, 2008
Hi, my h2g2 name is NotaFBene (in real life Nico Benschop).
I'm interested in (discrete, digital) Functions (seen as black boxes with inputs, outputs and internal states), their composition in a network, and their decomposition. Roughly this all falls under finite associative algebra, applied to digital network theory, FSM (finite state machines), semigroups, etc. In my Guide Entry "Why 42?" I wrote on a math interpretation of D.Adams' number 42 as the answer to everything...

Please sign me up. I'm interested in the 3n+1 Conjecture and Fermat's Last Theorem (and number theory in general).
