Ello! can I post here please, I don't have any de mylinated conditions, but I have been to conselling.

I did find it a great help with my problems. It depends on the technique that the cousellors use.

At the first session, he or she will just let you talk about your problems, and explain what his or her methods are.

If you are willing to honestly put forth the time and effort you cannot loose. The therapists personality & style is important even though most of the work is done outside of the appointment.

I don't want to be negeative, but I have spoken to people who haven't found counselling to be the right thing for them,It really depends on the situation. My step mother didn't find it useful when she lost her mother.

You need a good therapist, a goal, a commitment.
I would suggest not expecting an instant fix but to aquire the tools.

They are not all good by any means for all persons.
There are many methods.

From Jungian, New Age, Phsyciatry, social workers, psychologists, preachers, cognitive therapy, spiritual, art therapy , on and on.

There are confrontive styles used by some, while others are NOTsmiley - magic

I preferred the confrontive style, once I felt safesmiley - smiley

As far as it "working" it probably works for the typical 30% that lifestyle changes seem to stick to in general.

Abbi I went on a basic counselling course about 5 years ago. I expect that it would take at least 4 or 6 counselling sessions before I see any signs of improvement. On the course we were told about empathy, open questions, closed questions and effective listening techniques. It is going to be on the NHS so I wont have to pay. The counsellor will be visiting the surgery every once a month from London to Essex.smiley - smiley

Sounds OK to me. However, it should be noted that even worms have a 'nervous system' - it's just rudimentary. In fact, any living thing that needs to move from place to place has a brain of sorts. There's even one organism, the sea squirt Ascidian, that starts life able to swim about and attaches itself to a rock when it reaches maturity. At this point it 'consumes' its brain because it no longer needs one - it feeds by filtering food from the water that flows past it.

So maybe the welcome page should say 'anyone with a complex central nervous system and brain'. This would rule out the likes of worms and sea cucumbers (which have long been used for studying the nervous system because their nerves are so darned big), while allowing mammals, marsupials, fish (in case Blues smiley - shark wants to join in) and birds.

Cheerful, that's a very interesting point about nervous systems - I hadn't thought about their raison d'etre being movement. Do you think that was the evolutinary point og nervous systems developping?

I don't think we can exclude worms and sea cucumbers from dMN though - you never know who's going to turn up on h2g2 smiley - winkeye

I've got several books on psychology, from putting the subject in intelligent layman's terms to college textbook standard. It's the "layman's terms" one that makes the point that you only need a brain if you move from place to place - none of the others consider why a brain is necessary.

All animals have central nervous systems of some kind. Plants don't move, getting their nutrition from the air and soil, so they don't need one. So I guess that, yes, the central nervous system evolved to allow animals to move around - amongst other things, like feeding, breathing, circulating blood, controlling the organs as they evolved. And once animals were able to move around, they needed a brain to help them make decisions - fight or flight (or hide), 'Is this good to eat?', etc.

Depending on what kind of worms turn up we could have a worm farm! You know, somewhere to put all the vege scraps, and the worms eat it all up and multiply, and then you have yummy compost for growing more plants (we could put in a herb garden - Lemon Balm, Hypericum, Lavender, Rose, Chamomille, Rosemary...all great for nervous systems).

Some of the worms should be kept in the garden - they're essential for aerating the soil, which helps it to drain better, which in turn helps things to grow. A guy I once worked with hated worms because the worm casts (little piles of soil) spoiled the look of his lawn. He'd rather use an aerator than have worms, and wouldn't even consider waiting for the casts to dry and then brushing them away - a much 'greener' option.

As for the contents of our garden, let's have plenty more fragrant plants, as well as the herbs. A 'perfumed' garden is a wonderful place to sit and relax, which does the nerves (myelinated or not) no end of good.
