In the h2g2 Post Bug Special it was suggested that taking photos of bugs alongside coins would be helpful, to give a sense of scale - I had taken a photo of a carpet beetle but it looked much bigger than 3mm long.

I haven't seen a carpet beetle since June, but I did see a carpet beetle larva - it had put itself into my bathroom bin and was enjoying chewing on my hair clippings instead of my carpet.
