Sadly it was the giant house spiders, both me and the wife have a but of a phobia about.

Prof it needed a bit of thought as the block of wood, would need a lip to hold it in place (wind rattling the pane and the pull of gravity, leads to the wood falling groundwards otherwise)

The windows in my house can be opened by twisting a crank. I've just realized that I forgot to open them this summer, and it's pretty much too late to do it now.
