h2g2 The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy: Earth Edition

Welcome to the h2g2 Deathlist Game 2020!

After a low-scoring but very tight contest, I’m happy to announce that the winner of the 2019 contest is Coelacanth, with a score of 45. Galaxy Babe had a spirited fightback, but could only finish runner-up, five points adrift, alongside last year's winner Bluebottle. This is Coelacanth's fourth (and second outright) victory, and her first since 2016.

On to the 2020 game, and here are some stats on this year's entries:


For the 2020 contest, 11 entrants have selected a total of 131 celebrities, 29 of which were chosen for the first time.

There are 93 men on the list, 37 women, and 1 non-binary (Sam Smith). their average age is 79 years. The oldest picks are Kane Tanaka (116), and Kirk Douglas & Olivia de Havilland (both 103). The youngest pick is Paris Jackson (21).

Sequences:

Seven celebrities picked in the 2020 game have remained on the same list for 13 years. One is Coelacanth’s pick of Olivia de Havilland, and the other six are on Mol’s list: Alan Bennett, Michael Barrymore, Pete Doherty, Prince Philip, Rolf Harris and Tom Baker.

Long Time Away:

John Cleese, Terry Jones and Murray Walker were all picked for the first time since 2007. David Jason has also returned, having last been picked in 2009.

Deaths in 2019:

Of the celebrities who died in 2019, 32 had been picked at some time or other in the Deathlist game, and 13 of these were correctly picked in 2019. Of those we missed, the most recent picks were Jean, Grand Duke of Luxembourg and Mohamad Morsi, picked in 2015. One (John Paul Stevens) had not been picked since 2006.

The 2006 Originals:

A total of 35 celebrities picked in the first Deathlist game in 2006 are still alive, and 18 were picked again this year. Five celebrities have been picked in every year since 2006: Kirk Douglas, Olivia de Havilland, Pete Doherty, Prince Philip and Vera Lynn. We lost originals John Paul Stevens and Herman Wouk in 2019.

Returning Players:

I'm delighted to welcome Minichessemouse back to Deathlist. She last played in the 2012 game, in which she correctly predicted the death of Patrick Moore.

Some stats:

Nicholas Parsons had been picked nine times in this game, first in 2010 by van-smeiter. He was at times on The Groob's and Galaxy Babe's lists, but had been one of TC's picks since 2016.

Terry Jones was picked only twice in the past - by KB and Galaxy Babe in 2007.

O gosh. I was gutted when I read this. I had forgotten her was on my list. It was tongue in cheek really. I thought he was immortal. I am glad he only suffered a "short illness".

Kirk Douglas was this year's second top pick. He was top pick in 2019, 2018, 2017 and 2008.

He was picked in the original game in 2006, and in every year since. He had been a regular feature on MMF's list since 2010.

He was the third most picked celebrity in this game, with 76 picks. I'll leave you to guess who the top two were (both now deceased).
