Where I lived as a kid in the late 1940s we could see the airspace over Bushy park on the outskirts of London. That was then used for training paratroops. Their version of practice drops was to be hauled up in a gondala suspended under a large barrage balloon and jump on a static line from (I suppose) around a couple of thousand feet. It was always quite a pleasant sight to see them coming out of the balloon one after the other and see their parachutes blossoming. That would carry on all day with the balloon being hauled up and down for a new 'stick' each time.

Thanks for the story. I am afraid of heights myself and the idea of leaving a plane in a parachute fills me with horror. 
to all those brave men and women who did that on top of their other objectives during their war service.
