>Professor Oliver Rackham. Corpus Christi college has made an announcement:

We have several of his books here, probably his History of the Countryside is the best known. Thoroughly recommended for anybody who wants to know more about landscape, particularly woodlands.

Hmm, missed this before, my brother when to Corpus in the late 80s he may well have met with him when there. Wonder if he knows...

Shaw Taylor obituary. The BBC probably won't bother reporting his death for a few days I guess, seeing as he was ITV:

Interestingly, it seems from the comments below the obituary that this obituary was written before the death of Shaw Taylor and after the death of its author, Dennis Barker.

I'm wondering whether it's logically possible for Shaw Taylor to have written David McKie's obituary

I was wondering the exact same thing (great minds)
Although I recall the state funeral for the Queen Mother was planned many years in advance of her actually dying, so it's possible she outlived some of those who helped plan her funeral. I can think of a couple of obits which appeared in print prior to the person actually passing away, as well. I wonder if newspaper hacks, on a quiet day, don't start on an obit, say, when a well-known person reaches a certain age. Sort of like a non-annual deathlist, anyone can just keep adding to it until the person is removed from the pool.

Well it's either that or cut and paste from Wikipedia.

I gather that's partly how it works. Well-known personages have obituaries prepared in anticipation of their deaths. I suppose they have to be careful to pull some of them out of the files, dust them down and update them every now and then, if the subject turns out to have a longer and more active retirement than expected.

I admit I haven't checked the lists but I doubt anyone has him on theirs.

My dad is a big fan of Renbourn and Pentangle, both together and in its individual members, so I can confirm that he will be missed.
