That reminded me of something I read a while ago, about reclaiming desert...
around the edges, put cattle. They will compact and press their waste into the ground -
the salient point being that the dried grass they eat, as it's digested, releases or is converted into enough water to keep the animal alive, and the ground they've been on has a much better chance of becoming fertile...

Is this so?
