Or do they ...? You never know, eh, what will be learned, once those old family photos start to whisper their secrets. Inspiring, thanks! Bluebottle. That last line made me think, how we are all somewhere interlinked through DNA, even a distant cousin to the humble cabbage. Sort of thing.

My Granny always held that we were descended from William the Conqueror. I have no idea why. But that is a very cool distant relative, and very convincing. I am quite jealous.

William the Conqueror eh? heheh. Mind you, Grandmothers have wild and magic tales to tell, at least mine did. .
Funny thing, last night I had a dream about a sepia tinted photograph of a lady I had never seen before, looked like someone else's Great Aunt. . Perhaps I am related to her also. . The ancestor thing must be in my consciousness.
I was looking at old photos of my Grandmother the other day, she was my everything in childhood. I never knew what she looked like! Well, I did, but I didn't, if you know what I mean. Photos are stange like that.
I have been wading through my ancestors for the past two years. Both my parents have died in this time, and there were soooo many boxes of photos, and also cine films dating back to 1920s, which we have transferred to DVD, ancestors animated! that's weird.
What I've realised though, is that spaniels, and other dogs , and maybe cats, , and other animals, are a constant. . A spaniel from a photo from 1920 will look pretty much like a spaniel from 2013, I like that. . Helps with the ancestor thing. The past can be a strange creature, I find.

Well, on QI they said that almost everyone alive today is related to Charlemagne, so with William the Bastard you never know.
I've not got many photos of my old relatives – my Dad has, locked in a box somewhere, but most I've never seen. What I do know is that when my granddad died, he had boxes and boxes of photographs (one of his hobbies was photography) and no-one knew who or what most of the photographs are of. Since then I've made a point of always labelling every photo I take.
My granddad went through a phase in the late 70s of recording messages on audio tapes and posting the tapes, rather than writing letters. Some of those he sent have been copied onto CD, so I can listen to him talking. That's a bit odd, but comforting to listen to too when I miss him.
In my family we seem to have mainly owned cats. Throughout the ages, they always have the same look of disdain...
