A Conversation for Christmas in South Africa

Lovely picture Willem. I think a baobob tree trumps our silly old fir or spruce trees any day of the week for visual interest.

I know that Willem is an artist.
But I see no credit for the picture.
Whoever the artist is I would like to see more!

The picture is by Willem, and has now been credited. Thanks for drawing our attention to the oversight.

He has also done a number of the Around the Day in 80 worlds entries:

Thanks.
I'm so glad it is him.
I'll look for links to more of his work
at his homepage.
But other than links to his homepage
a credit as 'written and researched by'
and your intro paragraph
I see no specific credit for the artwork
on the entry page
except of course now your acknowledgment
in the immediate posting above.
What am I missing?

I changed what should be the rollover (alt) text. But I'm not sure how to get that to pop up. (Note to self: ask Pastey.)

Oh, OK.
It may be me and my computer.
I get ALT text reveals of the smiley names
in thread postings but it doesn't show me
anything in Entries with illustrations or
with smileys as in the Advent Calendar.
It may be the AdBlock I have installed.
Perhaps it sees smileys in threads as user input
but sees ALT text in Entries as pop-ups.
Anyway, don't wanna bore you with my problems
but I was just concerned that other readers
would want to know that Willem did his own
illustration as well as writing the Entry.
Dare I suggest a small change to your intro
to include that info?

Good idea, jwf. I will do that.
I'm still asking around to see what happened to that alt-text. I haven't been able to see those texts since the Move, either, and I wonder if it's something I said. If I find out, I'll let you know.
I hate that, too. Because I'm the sneaky beggar who writes snarky stuff in the alt-texts...

Used to love doing that myself.
Sorta like cheeky little surprises
or what the gamers call Easter Eggs.
BTW: You guys are doing a hell of a good job
at making this site into something like it had
promised before the Great Vogon Detour thru Beebland.
I find myself warming up to the idea of casting a few pearls
to the swine again. Got a few half-baked ideas for a new
Post column. Can't suppress the enthusiasm. I'll probably
come a knockin' when I get a few pieces together.

jwf, if you're in Firefox you need to right-click on the graphic, then click on 'show graphics info' to see t6he alt text. If you're in IE it should be shown if you hover over the picture with your mouse. If it doesn't show in IE, I'm stuck.
Btw, although it is totally fine to spell it out that it was Willem who did the art work, we usually only mention it if the artist and the author of the text are different people.

I can't see them in IE, either, Bel, so I'm stuck.
jwf, that's great. We'll hold you to that promise to send us something.

Not so much a promise as a threat
or merely a portentious and ominous
warning of the great 2012 endodays
apocko-lips.
Thanks Bel! Yes I switched to Firefix
about six years ago and now thanks to you
I can see what I've been missing.
Curiously I had sorta half discovered that
in my frustration to find the proper names
for all the new smileys in the calendar -
I was downloading them and then right
clicking for the image info and assuming
it was the last bit of the source URL.
Your way is a lot handier!
(And because I was seeing them at 8pm here,
as they were 'opened' by the clock striking
midnight in Britain, they weren't always
active and ready to use. Often, this method
didn't always result in being able to post
them until Pastey came and set them up in
the morning so I wasn't sure if the URL was
giving me the correct smiley name and I
posted a lot of carp to the Testing thread.)
Now I know!
Thanks,
~jwf~
