Amfoot Trivia Question 0010

Okay, here's the next question...

In a Monday night game in 1992, which player threw a right jab that Mike Tyson would have been proud of at Tim Brown, and what was the outcome of this altercation?

(By the way, if I seem to be streaking ahead, don't worry, I'm a Dolphin fan so I'll probably have a late season collapse and get knocked out in the first round of the playoffs!!smiley - sadface)

Bryan Cox (the linebacker not the actor from Manhunter) ...

*says confidently without any real knowledge other than FF is a 'Fins fan and they were probably just about good enough to make it onto MNF in 1992*

Oh, and the question requires subsequent ... so I guess Tim Brown got flagged (for unsportsmanlike conduct or something similar).

*struggles to remember how & what "we" were doing in 1992*

Well done BBS, it was indeed Bryan Cox. Not much of a question I guess but an incident that resides in a warm place in my heart.

And no, Tim Brown did not get flagged!!

"Errr, errr " *says David Coleman with ironic laugh* "So what happened next, Jonathan?"

It was a lucky guesstimation, given that Miami only had 1 "badboy" worth talking about. Unfortunately I have no idea about this incident so what happened next is a bit hard to guess. But logic says that Tim Brown was probably wearing a helmet at the time, so Cox injured himself in the process and so missed some play/rest of match having his fingers/fist x'rayed/repaired. smiley - laugh However you do say it is warmly remembered which implies it couldn't have been bad for Miami, so I'm at a loss if it wasn't that ...

Go on BBS, you can have the point (and beverage or snack of your choicesmiley - smiley)

What happened next isn't all that important, basically it was nothing, the refs missed the whole thing!

Tim Brown started the altercation by shoving Cox and getting in his face, so to speak. Following Cox's jab, Brown immeadiately backed off and called the refs, pointing accusingly at Cox. His appeals were unheaded however, and Cox wandered off looking like the Dark Destroyer!!!

Just one of those odd moments that I remember with clarity and enjoy.

Funny how some of the leagues most hated players are adored by fans of their own team isn't it?

One of the Raiders limemen took a flyer at Cox and got ejected?

That's the sort of thing that brings a happy smile to one's face. I fondly remember watching Chad Brown goading some packer's lineman into a second unsportsmanlike conduct call and getting himself ejected from the game. The happy, smiley - biggrining Chad waving at the poor smiley - devil as he trooped off the pitch while being berated by his coach still makes me smile.

There was a bit of aggro in the Packers/Bucs game after Warren Sapp splattered one of the Packers, well away from the ball, during a return.

Packers coach and Sapp were 'aving a right old chat after the game.

The quality bit was in the interview afterwards, along the lines of:
Packers coach: "So I was telling Warren Sapp that he's out of order laughing when another player is lying on the ground with no feeling in his legs"
Reporter: "And then what did Sapp say to you?"
Packers coach: "You don't want to know"
Reporter: "Yes, we do!"

and the NFL, in its' infinite wisdom, will not fine sapp for the cheap shot. he better watch his knees.

After looking at the replays they showed during the Sunday Night game, I don't think there's any reason to fine him. Yes, it was a blind sided block, but it was legal. I've had this happen to me while playing football, and although it hurts like hell it's nothing really worth complaining about. It's a legal hit. End of story. And I don't think that Sapp would have laughed had he known that the Packers player had no feeling in his legs.

As Mike Carlson said:
During a turnover, there are two rules you have to think about.
#1. Try to make a tackle.
#2. Protect yourself. Look over your shoulder to prevent getting blind sided.

I have to agree.

I too have been on the wrong end of this situation and I concur with VRHG that it bloody hurts. My only thoughts after though were along the lines of what a dolt I was for not being aware!!!

Sapps hit was well within the rules, perfectly legal and a clean shot. It was unfortunate that Clifton received a serious injury but this doesn't negate the legality of the hit.

Ku'Reshtin (Bring the beat back!)

I've been on the wrong end of one of those hits not once, but twice. First time it was in a similar situation as the incident on Sunday, during an interception, and the guy who tackled me told me it was only because I was the only one on the field that didn't have a totally muddy jersey, and he wanted to see some mud on it.smiley - smiley Knocked me out of the game, though, as I think I tore something in my rib cage and couldn't really sit/stand/lie down for about a week afterwards.
Second time was only a couple of minths ago, but that was not during a turnover, it was just me being stupid and not looking after myself, and the hit just knocked the wind out of me and I was able to get back on the field after about 5 minutes again.

Still, I didn't complain (too much) about those hits but took them in my stried and hopefully I'll learn to grow eyes in the back of my neck until our next game. smiley - smiley

several, a/k/a random

i am convinced that eyeholes in the back of the football helmet are needed. i was never hurt too bad playing football, but a baserunner caved in my knee one day as i blocked the plate as the ball was arriving from right field. the runner was out, and the hospital took a LARGE NEEDLE of fluid i shan't describe before the swelling would even subside. arthur dent? arthur-itis!
