I am entirely behind that list !!!

Taff Agent of kaos Posted Jul 4, 2011
some of this is subjective and a clear policy has to be adopted
ie. is it racist if the offended party deems it to be racist
some of it goes on now with out a blink, 3rd party int. property stuff, like the you tube thread
i think you need to take that list and thrash out each point in private then bring it to the comunity, otherwise the arguments will still be going when h2g2 changes hands the NEXT time

(I'm sorry, but I must be a little pleased with the clarity of post #10, and how things have run for such a time)
But yes, point by point, I think each was quite clear and if there are shades of grey, they should be thrashed out gently.

Unlawful material
harassing material
defamatory material
abusive material
threatening material
harmful material
obscene material
profane material
sexually oriented material
racially offensive material
otherwise objectionable material
overuse of bleep smiley
if i take offence at welsh jokes, is that racist, you would not tolerate pakistani jokes, some people in ethnic minoritys are more sensative than others
profanity, do we have a list of naughty words??
obscene and sexual what is the limits??

Try us, Taff, but you'll have to describe the behaviour rather than post it (tricky, I know - just be creative)

We can ignore all the legal ones in the meantime. The IC will have to get legal advice on things like defamation etc, because we won't have big time bbc lawyers any more to protect us.
No brainers:
illegal activity
condoning illegal activity
infringing copyright/plagiarism
violating other 3rd party and intellectual property rights
unsuitable URLs
racist material
pornographic or sexually explicit material
potentially defamatory material
anything which encourages illegal activities
material which infringes copyright
sites which purely plug or promote commercial products or services without containing material which enhances the subject matter
sites which may offend our users [this last one probably needs discussion]

The political ones can probably change, because we will no longer be a public broadcaster. Anyone familiar with UK law and election rules?

Icy North Posted Jul 4, 2011
As to elections, there are no legal obligations, it's just a BBC impartiality thing (and rightly so for a state broadcaster).
But before you tear that one up, you might think to yourself: "Do I want the site being flooded with [insert your hated political party here] activists posting all their vile "
Or you might think "Isn't it good that people can post their opinions here? I may not agree with those <bleep?s but I uphold their right to post it"
Choose your masque, as Hawkwind once said.

Don't you have legal obligations like not campaigning on election day?
Party activists, imagine how well they'd get on here

"Posting in a foreign language"
- there are two things to say about that.
1. Posting in Welsh was always forbidden, even though the site was a UK site and Welsh is not a "foreign language" in the UK.
2. Should we ban posting in languages such as French and German which many people speak?

Icy North Posted Jul 4, 2011
Yes, I think you may be right about the election day ban on campaigning, but I don't know the law particularly. The BBC ban extends to the whole campaign period, though, doesn't it?

I'm not sure if this is the right thread but I don't want things to get too airy fairy in noohootoo.
Eg if someone proves themselves to be an abusive person beyond the pale..I say 100%ban no mucking about.
Community Volunteers - House Rules
Something like that (it's never affected me). I think they used to allow one thread here for the month?
My point was we can change that policy if we want, because it will have little to do with noohootoo.

This site hosts friends from every 'corner' of the globe. Banning of ideas and the like for elections just is not practical. Look at my country as an example, no official opinions can be expressed for nearly 6 hours because time zones go so far.
On the whole, to the present the most of h2g2 folks are open minded enoough to read and choose on their own.
A simple policy perhaps, ... Express your opinions, but no broadcasting of party propoganda?

Can you give an example Effers? Of behaviour, not a specific person.
