Pierre de la Mer ~ sometimes slightly worried but never panicking ~

So we could either change back to ".uk" or - and I prefer this: - we could archive them

Gnomon's right!
And before it was BBC.uk it was just h2g2.com

Someone must contact the library at once and
convince them to broaden their horizons!
Bob forbid that all we get preserved is from
the Great Vogon Detour thru Beebland.

Actually, the bbc are listed separately in that list.

So they've seen us outside of that and decided.

Secretly Not Here Any More

If you look at the list, you can stop getting het up.

I mean, the first one on the list is Scotland.org. Not Scotland.org.uk. Scotland.org. That would suggest that it's not limited to .uk domains.

You don't even have to read the announcement to understand that.

But if you do read the announcement, and read sentences all the way to the end, you'll realise that Gnomon's jumped the gun.

"Please note that the regulations enable us to archive websites that end in .uk, or that are created or published in the UK."

We're the latter. Panic over. Back to work.

Sorry, that came across as snarkier than it should've. In the middle of some work. Using a very straight, prescriptive tone. Not got my voice back yet.

The announcement actually says:-

""Please note that the regulations enable us to archive websites that end in .uk, or that are created or published in the UK.""

If you look through the list of 100 there are some sites there as .org and .com but are made, run, and published in the UK.

Icy North

We must be one of the few sites on that list that never archives or deletes content.

I was wondering how the British Library intends to catalogue/make available information on, say, the BBC website which subsequently gets canned.

We can't rely on the BBC archiving it for themselves. They can't even hang on to episodes of classic TV shows smiley - erm

Gnomon - time to move on

I presume they're talking about a once-off snapshot of each site.

Almost certainly Gnomon.

For the other site I've built that they've archived they took a snapshopt of the database and the code to display it.

I think Icy brought up a good point. smiley - smiley We're the ultimate pack-rat website. I think that's good.

We're almost unique in that we're writing for the future. We refuse to succumb to the 'now' mentality - the idea that the only thing the web is good for is to register ephemera. smiley - winkeye We're opposed to the attitude that says, 'That's soooo five minutes ago.'

I mean, somebody has to take the long view. As they say in Romania, 'Apa trece, pietrele ramân', meaning, 'The water flows on, but the stones remain.' smiley - whistle

Geez, that was confusing with the pine cones!
Nice bridge though! smiley - towel
Maybe I got the wrong end of the pooh stick
but how did pine cones become a dragonfly and
Eeyore's tail! A pine cone by any other name
would still be sorta pointy and scaley.
