There is only one thing worse than being Gosho, and that is not being Gosho

What perfect timing - I'm almost at the end of 'Stranger in a Strange Land'... again. Never tire of that book.

I think we have the beginnings of a good entry here, but it's no more than that right now. It's needs a good deal of work. When writing an entry about a person which you intend for submission to Peer Review, and hopefully for inclusion the Edited Guide, try to think of it as a biography as much as a paeon of praise. Anyone who searches for Robert Heinlein on h2g2 may want to know about his life as well as works.

He's such a well known figure in science fiction writing that I'm sure there must be plenty of websites out there you can use for research, and in no time have a really good entry compiled.

Have a look at these two entries to see two very different ways of writing an entry about someone:

A264854
A543052

You have an added advantage with Heinlein in that you can also include much about his writings.

I would really like to see an entry about this author in The Guide smiley - biggrin

well, gee, there are definitive bios already posted and linked on the luna-city website, including conversations that wander just like those on h2g2. i'm not gonna re-invent the wheel, just thought heinlein should have a mention in the Guide since he, isaac and arthur paved the way for sci-fi/fantasy to become legitimate, best-selling literature.
you folks pretty it up to fit your criteria, i'm not into chatting.

In that case, you've misunderstood the way that h2g2 works.

sorry if i came across badly. "stranger" was actually very controversial, heinlein had to wait ten years before he could publish it (see pp.396-404 of the paperback "expanded universe" for his own explanation), but i'm just a newbie to the site and, at age 46, not inclined to chatting and smileys. i just write words.
AND just WHAT was valentine michael smith working on before he martyred himself? a dictionary/reference book? gee, does that sound familiar somehow? something for future generations to expand on?
actually, it all starts with isaac's 'encyclopedia galactica' ("foundation" 1951) so if i start with heinlein, i have to reference asimov and here's a whole monster project on on how sci/fi became
"respectable" and maybe one of the kids out there wants to do it as a doctorate...
"how douglas adams got drunk, laid in a field, and eventually the beeb sponsored an interactive website, based on the writings of asimov and heinlein and transmogrified thru douglas adams' hangover."

if you know any old american cartoons, this is the high-pitched "help, cecil, help!" and deep bass "i'm coming, beanie boy." that has been stuck in my mind since the early-mid-60's (cecil, the sea-sick sea serpent or some such.) how can i/we get heinlein into the Guide? thanks.

okay, i did capital letters, tweaked it around, relatively happy, how do i go to peer review, to a scout or sub-ed? i'm losing focus, going offline for a few hours, i'll be back, and thanks for all you folks' help.

Well mate, you've already found yourself a Scout right here (and one who is also 46 years old... how 'bout that). To get this entry to a Sub-ed you first have to get it to Peer Review where it must be picked by a Scout before being sent to a Sub-editor by the h2g2 Editors themselves. I don't think this is quite ready for Peer Review yet, as PR is meant for entries which are either finished, or require the minimum of final polishing.

I'll have to leave it at that for now because I'm getting ready to head out to work. Perhaps someone else will have also taken a look at it by the time I get another chance - tomorrow I'd say.

thanks, gosho, i appreciate any help. egon (148120) may allow me a few lines in his weekly sports post, to cover american football. i'll hang in around here. you must go to work way too early (or late), i can't tell, my time differential clock still blinks 12:00...12:00...

It should probably mention that heinlein was a constant thorn in the side of senator proxmire, who was finally allowed to get his revenge on heinlein in the story "proxmire's revenge" where he goes back in time and cures heinlein's TB.

y'know, xyroth, i've heard of that story before, but i can't point out what/where the source is. if you can help, please do.
i've also been informed that i can quote, but i'm unsure of the legality. if i can, i would surely include this from the foreword of expanded universe: "the writing business is not such as to evoke amusing memoirs (yes, i mean you and you and especially (italics) you.) a writer spends his professional time in solitary confinement, refusing to accept telephone calls and declining to see visitors, surrounded by a dreary forest of reference books and somewhat-organized papers. the high point of his day is the breathless excitement of waiting for the postman. (the low point is usually immediately thereafter.)"
everyone who has stared at a blank piece of paper (or a blank confuser screen) knows 'qwertyuiop' is the first line.

oh my goodness, xyroth, how did someone of YOUR credentials...i mean, howinthelivingheck...i only found this place a month ago, joined about 3 weeks ago...all i can say is thanks, man! i'm pretty nearly techno-illiterate (that's not even a word, c'mon, rick, speak english!) i don't know my way around, but i dang well sure want to help write Guide entries, and i'm trying to find out how the system works, one's telling me to go straight to peer review, another says stay in the workshop...
i would like to add bios and links to isaac asimov, arthur c. clarke, ken kesey, tom wolfe and tom robbins, but i need to focus on heinlein, try and watch and learn, maybe, maybe, maybe...one thing at a time, rick...thank you again, kind sir.

I think that I saw the story reprinted in "foundation's friends", but I can't remember the original source.

Do let me know if I turn out to be wrong about that.
