Magrethea's Workshop - Engaging the Community

So, guys, gals, and furry creatures from Alpha Centauri, what have I missed out?
Remember, this isn't about attracting new people to the Guide, it is about retaining both them and existing members during and after the change.
If you could mention if your idea is in the Through The Change or the Into The Future section it would be appreciated.
Thanks,

I was actually watching you make them at the time. It was weird, watching the words write themselves!

An idea for the time when h2g2 may be down: I think there are free forums - or rather pages that allow you to create forums without payments. I think this would be a good option. We could not publish any Entries and things like that but we could stay in touch and keep everyone updated about changes.
The google group is a bit difficult to use I think and I would not want to join facebook.

Keeping in touch with the Researchers could be done with a 'proto-h2g2' that runs on the new location and starts just before the 'Rupert-2' and ends with the Grand Re-Opening.
The 'proto-h2g2' would look and feel the same but the only content are a few Forum threads where Researchers can post while the BBC-run h2g2 would have to stay online but with creating Entries and posting disabled.
This is just a general outline and as soon as details are known definite plans will be made and procedures agreed on by all parties involved.

I read it, fixed a typo. It looks fine to me.

Interesting thought about a proto-hootoo Martin - hopefully the cutover will involve downtime of only a few hours, at the most and we can pick a time when the site is quiet.

There are many possibilities on how the transition can be done but most of it depends on how cooperative the BBC and 'the new owner' are.
I could write an essay about these kind of migrations, as I have done a number of them, but without more information it is kind of pointless to go into detail.
That's why I gave an outline of how it could be done in a way that i.m.h.o. is most agreeable to all parties involved.

Great idea Haragai. How about scenarios ranging from 'extremely cooperative' to 'cooperative but plagued with technical difficulties'?
I just don't want to believe the BBC would ever sell us to a real uncooperative .

OK, I kicked off a doc called "h2g2 On the Move" here

I made the link un-click-able on purpose.

LOL, yeah. How about that "Brain drain" kind of thing, eh?
I'll change the share setting so sub-eds can pick at typo's.

This is beginning to feel like spam, but it's relevant to the topic of (re)engaging the community. Not for the short term though, because it requires significant technical imput. But here's an Idea I had earlier.... Introducing Imprints - A82710326

Any nits you find you can pick ay time you like.
As Editor (hmmm, where have I heard that before?) you, or anyone else with the link for that matter, can pick nits, correct spelling, add, subtract and amend as you wish.
we can all look at the "File - Revision History" to see who did what to the document.

If there is to be some time when h2g2 is unavailable would we be able to have one thread on the other BBC messageboards for updates about the new place.
You could still have the prototype as well but using a BBC messageboard thread for updates would mean everyones password already works using BBC single sign on. We already can post on messageboards.
The only problem might be the BBC messageboards are moderated strictly for anything off topic which is removed and we would be off topic of course.
