Haven't read the b/log yet sorry, but had to respond to this from the OP:

IMO it's not about attracting or retaining people to the Guide, it's about attracting and retaining people to the site of h2g2 which is guide and community entwined.

It's really starting to bother me how much h2g2 is being reframed as the Guide. I mean, it is the guide obviously, but it's not the EG alone and there's the risk here that the community stuff will get lost.

kea, it's a good point. We should all try very hard to use the correct word to avoid confusion.

Here is how I've been trying to use them at least while I'm awake and alert:
Guide = EG + UG + The Post
h2g2 = Guide + the rest of the site
h2g2 Community means all of us who use the site
