A Conversation for Talking Point: Special Occasions away from Home

kelli - ran 2 miles a day for 2012, aiming for the same for 2013

I spend a lot of time away from home because of w*rk, usually just during the week, but occasionally weekends too. As a result I'm usually not at home for things like birthdays and anniversaries (although I am usually in the uk so at least I am in touch!). It is difficult, and I feel guilty when I miss other people's celebrations but I always make sure to have a conversation on the phone and I'm good at sending cards so my nearest and dearest know I am thinking of them even if I can't be there.

I was in Thailand for my birthday this year and I missed being made a fuss of by my boyfriend, but he packed a small present in my case (to give me a hint as to what my real present was) so it was good to open that on the day and know that he was thinking of me. Small thoughtful things like that really made all the difference, and I wasn't so sad to be apart on a special day.

It was!

The thing he put in my suitcase was a wrapped up compact mirror - it did worry me that I had to say at the check in desk that I packed everything myself and wasn't carrying any 'gifts' for anyone else smiley - biggrin.

The little mirror was a hint that he had actually bought me the big (5'x4') steel and glass mirror I had had my eye on for about a year! I had been failing to convince myself that I could afford the extravagance. He had got it put up for when I got back and it looks fab! smiley - ok

He also gave my mum a valentines card to give to me on feb 14th that I didn't know about. See, he can be romantic when he *really* tries smiley - laughsmiley - loveblush
