I can't remember the exact quote (which is probably good since I would get Moderated) but Tom Lehrer in one of his albums said something like-
"I know there are people in the world who don't follow my belief of peace and anti-war. I would just like to find those people and KILL THEM!"
I think I know a few people like that.

It's the song "National Brotherhood Week"
"I know there are people who do not love their fellow man and I HATE people like that!"
Well, that's more accurate anyway. He didn't suggest killing them - save that for the pidgeons...

(Oh the hindus hate the muslims, and the muslims hate the hindus, and the catholics hate the protestants, and everybody hates the jews! )

Or even:
(Oh the catholics hate the Protestants, and the Protestants hate the Catholics the hindus hate the muslims. Oh the hindus hate the muslims, and everybody hates the jews! )
Dang memory *smacks side of head*

A flood of memories just washed over all the grey cells that were stunned by the late sixties and early seventies. Thanks. I think.

The Kingston Trio echoed the sentiment in this song:
" ... Italians hate Yugoslavs, South Africans hate the Dutch,
And I don't like anybody very much".
(The last line sung with a slightly drunk accent)
Of course, we've come a long way since then ...

What is it with wars on religion? It's just arguing over who's got the best imaginary friend?
I'd attribute this if I could remember who I heard it from!

Don't worry, be happy Lehrer was making fun of the US declaring "National Brotherhood Week" as if we only have to love our fellow man one week out of 52. As to the other, I'm certain it was a spoof also.

Wait a minuet, I think I missed something there. No more G&T's before supper....

That kindda fits in with another Tom Lehrer song, Nuclear proliferation Rag (I think?)
"Oh we'll all go together when we go, every Hotentot and every Eskimo, when the air becomes uraneous, we will all go simultaneous, yes we'll all go together when we go." Or similar....

McKay -
I only vaguely remember that Lehrer song, but I do recall "So Long, Mom (A Song for World War III)":
"So long, Mom, I'm off to drop the bomb,
So don't wait up for me.
But while you swelter, down there in your shelter,
You can see me, on yout TV.
While we're attacking frontally,
Watch Brinkally and Huntally
Describing contrapuntally
The cities we have lost.
No need for you to miss a minute
Of the agonizing holocaust."
Lehrer introduced this by saying if we're going to have folk songs about WWIII, we better start writing them now.

So I should expect complaints about the "Merry Minuet" lyrics?

SK- don't ask me how moderation works. I've quoted song lyrics before and found them erased within minutes. Other times like this no one seems to care. It all depends on who pushes the little shocked blue smiley I guess.

Thanks Steve - I can see I'm going to have to crank up the old vinyl player and drag out my LPs.
cl - yeah, I quoted Milligan and Kipling in a poetry thread and got pulled very quickly - however you'll notice my disclaimer of - or similar - I have altered the words slightly.
Maybe its the new open moderation ?

I just read about the new moderation seconds ago. I tend to think this new system is a lot more realistic plus a smaller workload for the moderators. I won't push the boundaries to find out where they are but it's nice to see these old lyrics again. Lehrer is available in Canada on CD by the way.
