A Conversation for How would a community-led h2g2 be run?

Thanks for drawing my focus back to this, Z.
I've been going about the Volunteer groups all wrong, haven't I. We don't need to change their job roles to absorb the function of the current Eds. What we need to do is to vote people in to replace them.
I've been *so* barking up the wrong tree, haven't I.
Dare I go back in that thread/document and suggest any more changes yet?

I think we *should* go back to the thread.
I think we need to draw up a list of everything the Editor's do, and then estimate how much time would be spent replacing them. Then we can talk about how to divi up the jobs. Realistically the nooitalics would be the same people that the current volunteers are, plus a few more..

You can look at jobs on h2g2 in 2 different ways:
1. Clearly defined jobs - to make 2 picks a month from PR
2. 'As needed jobs' To do what's needed to keep the site running.

Some volunteers would only be confident or comfortable doing clearly defined jobs.
I would image the elected editors working closely with each other to divide up the needed jobs.

I've been doing more thinking. I think we need to do things in two stages
1. We need to transfer - 'as is' with as few changes as possible. We elect people to replace the Editors, establish a democratic structure. At first we run the site much as we do now. During this period
2. We then debate proposed changed to how the site would run on site, making sure that everyone has had a say. This would include the changes in the GBD
3. Once we've reached consensus or as close as we can get we hold a big site wide referendum to get to get agreement.
4. We the implement the new process.

Tav created a thread of all the tasks that need to be done to run h2g2. It's a matter of grouping them together into sensible chunks and calling the chunk a "role".
I'm not sure where Tavs' thread is. Probably in Ask somewhere.

Mmm. *nods* I don't think it was entirely wrong; the Volunteer schemes do need looking at from a job perspective, which I was attempting to do, I just forgot that we will have Editors so there isn't nearly as much change needed as I thought.
If I get the chance I might actually email the current Eds and see what they are allowed/able to to talk about.
First thoughts:
Editorial
=========
-Choose Entries from the Scout list
-Allocate those Entries to Subs, and remove the Entry from PR
-Receive polished Entries back, check them for House Rules/BBC standard
-Use the Photographers and Artists to get an image created for the Entry, then get it blobbed for h2g2
-Publish to Front Page and change status to Approved
-Categorise the Entry in LtU&E and add to Front Page archive.
-Oversee all Entries in the process to check nothing is forgotten or left with a Sub too long etc.
-Keep up in Peer Review to ensure that worthy Entries are not left languishing
-Oversee the Curators and make sure that EF is working
Community
=========
-Respond to moderation queries that are forwarded to them by the moderation team.
-Deal with complaints and comments
-Arrange the Talking Point each week, and try to get those who comment to stay on-site
-Keep the Community up to date with developments (where able, obviously!)
-Keep an eye on conversations that are going on in the most publically viewable areas to make sure that they are going OK, not getting too flame-y and that any new commenters are being welcomed
-Make sure that the ACEs are working the way they should and that new members are being welcomed
Other
=====
-Record stats or manage stats to be able to report progress to higher-ups
-Plan long term strategies for the future of h2g2
-Liase with the technical team to keep h2g2 running smoothly
Now I *really* need to get back to work. I've done very little this morning.

No, it's not been all wrong at all, it's just it's medium term thinking where we need to work on short term.

Cheers, sweetheart. Sometimes I miss pieces out of a jigsaw, but they're such obvious pieces it's embarassing.
We'll have a better go at it this evening.

That's how learning works. We struggle with something and then a synapse sparks or clicks in the brain and we think how obvious was that?
This is too big for any one of us to have the whole thing in our heads unless we were working on it full time. But we've all got day jobs.... (That's how come I ended up annoying Jordan, I've just not had the time to read the Editorial Process properly, so I've been commenting from ignorance, not knowledge).
Be of good cheer.

Oh, we will be, definitely. I just wanted to get a few of my thoughts together before I went back into that forum and potentially upset more people by posting before thinking things through.
Key: Complain about this post
