>> if we don't have a clue what people are saying it might appear to be amicable.

Don't take my word for it Effers. Ask the "foreigners". The relevant researchers are still around. Ask Hapi, and Ottox, and Mala, and Titania, and Santra, and Pierce, and Bel, and the other Germans, Danes and Swedes who are still here. Ask them if there were problems unique to the foreign language threads.

Let me repeat my question about in-house sanity checkers. Would it work, do you think, if researchers who spoke the language agreed to volunteer to be the go-to-guys-and-girls for the mods if a foreign language post was yikesed?

Ben

Geeze people, there seems to be alot of misunderstanding and misinterpretation of peoples' words going on at the moment smiley - headhurts Any chance we can stop jumping to conclusions or the worst interpretation of peoples' motives? I'm talking about all of us here.

Effers, I read Ben's statement to mean that it didn't cause problems onsite in general. People will argue, troll, flame in whatever language. I don't see how that's relevant to the site being multilingual assuming we have the resources to moderate. Moderating in German is no different than moderating in English.

While I understand your concern about cliquey infighting, I think we need to be more trusting of people and the community. If posts were allowed in German I think there would be enough German speakers here to prevent any bitching behind people's backs kind of thing. And if that did happen, it'd get moderated.

Myself, I see the multilingual thing being more about encouraging diversity.

I can't remember any special problems in the German threads.

Effers;England.

>there were problems unique to the foreign language threads.<

No but it appears they are uniquely pleasant. Must be nice to be forin.

I particularly like that *everything* is out in the open if we stick to one language.

But I can easily live with it. In fact to be totally honest, I know you like that, at present I don't give a flying smiley - bleep

I thought it was good to thrash stuff out...even if it got silly in some ways. But i'll happily drop it now...I'm as sick of it as most others are I expect.

I'd still like to hear the argument *for* from polyglots (or anyone for that matter). What are the advantages to h2 of being multilingual? How important is it to polyglots? etc

Well, I must say it sometimes feels kind of strange talking to Mala in English here on h2g2. It's just a bit unnatural.

>>> then why did happy nerd seem to think it was ok to deride me for it???

The topic was and still is about whether h2g2 could or should be multilingual, and if so, how would multiple languages/alphabets be managed/supported.

You once again attempted to derail the topic to idle speculation about the country h2g2 would eventually be based in. You failed to make a convincing case that such speculation would be the least bit productive toward managing a multilingual community.

Had you privately asked without attempting to derail this thread or any other, I would have given you the same answer Ben gave you.

Don't try to make this about me. Or you. And don't try to derail threads of interest to the future of h2g2.

Once again: the topic was and still is about whether h2g2 could or should be multilingual, and if so, how would multiple languages/alphabets be managed/supported.

It was TRiG: >>No one will be posting anything in Chinese* or Urdu until the codebase has been updated to use Unicode. Even Welsh can be tricky enough. I don't think w-with-circumflex exists in ISO-8859-1.<< http://www.bbc.co.uk/dna/h2g2/F20154027?thread=8232389&skip=0&show=200#p109259576

I think the question about which country h2 would be hosted in was related to legal issues/moderation and whose legal system we would be operating under.

Taff, be a good boy or bat and come back to the thread where you and I are discussing swimming, rather politely and sanely I might add, and let's leave these nice people alone.

Forgive the intrusion, Zed, I can hardly wait until I practice my 'foreign' languages before I lose them all to disuse.

And by the way that's another reason to let h2g2 return to its polyglot roots. So researchers who may yet have some tiny remnants of other languages can use them before they forget them entirely.
