Milla, h2g2 Operations

I've sent a version of the master back.

As a non-native English speaker, I found it hard to know when to use two words, hyphenated words or a "combined" word, so I haven't really changed those. I think in school they taught us to use two words mostly, where Swedish has a combined word. (two words written as one).

So I go a lot on gut feeling. If it helps, fine. If not, ignore it.

p148/258: "What Ramanujan is saying here is that 1729" should read "What Ramanujan is saying here is that 1,729". Add a comma.

I would also consider removal of the ambiguity genertated by the second hyphen which could be taken as a "minus sign" in front of the equation. Maybe put the "in other numbers" inside brackets?

World War

p30/258: First World War
p147/258: World War I
p148/258: World War II
p149/258: World War II (twice)
p162/258: World War II (twice)
p205/258: First World War
p228/258: World War Two
p235/258: World War Two

Without knowing otherwise, I'd think that "First World War" and "World War II" would be sufficiently correct. I'm not hard and fast though.

But if so corrections are required on p147, p228 and p235.

"I would also consider removal of the ambiguity generated by the second hyphen" Or change the second hyphen to a colon.

"gray => grey" I think Ben suggested we allow American spellings in these entries.

Ben, you will have noticed that I am quoting the page numbers that appear on the Anthology document itself. Would it be easier for you if I used the system Trout Montague is using? By the way, the page numbers on the PDF file do not exactly match those on the Word document.

I echo Rude Elf: "in other numbers" could possibly be italicised with an excleamation mark to emphasise to the reader its informality, say, something like:

"Or in other words - in other numbers - (3 + 1,729) = (729 + 1,000)."

"Or in other words... in other numbers(!)</>: (3 + 1,729) = (729 + 1,000)."

I can accept it'll be unpopular with the purists but ... well y'know.

I've not yet started working through this thread and the Master; I am hoping to print out the posts on this thead and start tonight, but the best laid plans, etc. (I've not got the first proofs back from lulu yet, so I can't place a second order anyway).

Because I've not started, I've not yet got an opinion on which page numbers work best. Word shows me both the absolute page number (ie page 1 is the first page of the document) and the section page number (ie page 1 is the first page of the Introduction) so I should be able to work out where I am using either approach.

I'm really grateful for the whole-document approach you are taking - it's invaluable and definitely necessary. It's depressing how much we missed on the first pass....

Er... can I say "thank you" again?

I do have a definitive answer on the page number question. It is a little easier for me if you use the page number for the whole document. ie Page 1 is the first page of the document. But if you are working from a printed copy, then use the number printed on the page.

I expect to be working on this tonight and, at this rate, on Thursday too.

It's arrived!

It's looking good, (but not great yet - there are two blank pages after the tables of contents where there should be one, so the odd numbers are on the even pages. smiley - doh)

I'll crack on with updating the master tonight. I am VERY keen to get the order in as soon as possible now.
