A town is what the people make it. Your telling about Middlesbrough it is all about its people. Take them away and you have a pretty good place to live.
The coast - Teesmouth, Redcar, Marske, Saltburn and beyond. Chilly compared to the South Coast but a good deal more refreshing and stimulating.
Inland - Roseberry Topping, the Cleveland Hills, Rosedale, Farndale, The Lyke Wake walk, the Cleveland way. All very good walking and cycling country at any time of year. Not so far away is Teesdale with its waterfalls.
With regard to the people, they are no different to those in other NE coast places like Sunderland and Hartlepool (or a score of other big towns in the UK) and for the very same reasons.
Those reasons are due to attitude, first within local government and then within the residents themselves. We all know what is needed but there is no heart for change.
Middlesbrough has one of the best mottos in the country 'ERIMUS' but everyone has forgotten what it means!
