Entry: Phil Ochs - A782273

Basically this entry stems from the fact that I just bought a Phil Ochs CD and became obsessed with him. I searched the guide to see if there was an entry on Ochs and was dismayed that there wasn't one, so dismayed in fact that I decided to write one of my own. It's probably not amazingly good, but that's what editors are for, I suppose.

Interesting entry, i'd never heard of Phil Ochs before now. It's a pleasant coincidence that there are two entries about anti-war bands in Peer Review at the moment smiley - biggrin

In your entry the final paragraph talks about how much you like Phil Ochs. This isn't really acceptable if you intend for your entry to make it into the edited guide; all entries must be written in the third person. (See the Writing-Guidelines for more.) However, this is easily fixable. Rather than writing about how much you like Ochs, simply change the paragraph to say how he has many devoted fans worldwide.

You may also be interested in referencing these guide entries -
A301104 - Bob Dylan
A715024 - War and protest - the US in Vietnam
If you need helping with adding these as links/references (if you want to, that is) then just ask smiley - smiley

Oh, and "1960's" should be written as "1960s"

I don't know anything about Phil Ochs, but I like this entry. It's interesting and generally well-written. Unless there are factual inaccuracies or important points left out (I wouldn't know) it's looking good.

Just mentioning how much you like Phil Ochs isn't very informative unless you go on to say what it is you like so much. But the entry does that anyway, although you could if you like add a personal appreciation of his qualities, without using the dreaded 'I' word.

>It's probably not amazingly good, but that's what editors are for, I suppose.

I don't think so. Editors just correct a typo here, a bit of style there, maybe add some links, sort out the GuideML, that sort of thing. It's here in Peer Review that you'll most likely get some constructive comments if any are needed - then its up to you, not the Editors, to incorporate them into the finished article.

Good luck with this one!

I have to agree with Bels - a good entry, but the last section's not really necessary. You could drop the 'In Conclusion' header and the bit about how much you like the artist (that much should be clear by the quality of the entry itself). Instead, you could have a 'Further Reading' header and the link to the official homepage.

Very good entry here - well done!

There is only one thing worse than being Gosho, and that is not being Gosho

I have to agree with all the above comments - I very good piece which just needs to lose the last header, and I would also add that it could do with a little more info on the time and manner of his death.

The Guide needs an entry about Phil Ochs - he was one of the most important people in the protest music movement, at least as important as Woody Guthrie, Pete Seeger, Bob Dylan, etc, but often overlooked.

With a little more work this would be a valuable entry smiley - smiley

Thanks for all the info, I'll do my best to rectify my errors. I was afraid that that last bit would annoy some readers...I suppose it should go without saying that I'm a big fan. smiley - smiley

I'll go delete/edit that segment now. smiley - ok

I guess I read the post-deleted version. . .
I really liked this entry. I knew nothing about Phil, now I do. I agree that links to other artists of the era is appropriate. Perhaps too if you're aware of any artists that are around currently that are influenced by him tat may tie in more readers.
This was a fun read.
Thanks!

Your Guide Entry has just been picked from Peer Review by one of our Scouts, and is now heading off into the Editorial Process, which ends with publication in the Edited Guide. We've therefore moved this Review Conversation out of Peer Review and to the entry itself.

If you'd like to know what happens now, check out the page on 'What Happens after your Entry has been Recommended?' at EditedGuide-Process. We hope this explains everything.

Thanks for contributing to the Edited Guide!

Hello CNCN, hello Peer Reviewers! smiley - smiley

I'm GTBacchus, and I'll be your Sub Editor this evening. smiley - smiley First of all, congratulations on getting picked. smiley - bubblysmiley - ok Your first entry, I see. Right on!

It's a good entry, and I was happy to see it show up in my subbing batch, because I'm something of an Ochs fan myself.

I'm actually subbing a copy, which can be found at A789997. That copy is the version that will hit the Front Page smiley - wow, and go from there into immortality, etc. Your original is yours to keep, and there's no way anyone like me can get our grubby little hands on it. smiley - bigeyes

Feel free to drop by and see what I'm doing (adding links, minor tweaking, whatnot). If you have any comments, corrections, complaints or questions... this thread is a great place to post those. In a few days, I imagine I'll have gone over it as many times as can reasonably be expected, and it should be ready for submitting to the Towers sometime next week.

BTW, have you heard the Billy Bragg song "I Dreamed I Saw Phil Ochs Last Night"? It's quite good, and it's on Bragg's unrepentantly communist album "The Internationale". That, and They Might Be Giants' "The Day", were the songs that made me aware there was a person called Phil Ochs who might be worth knowing about.

Anyway, thanks again for the entry!

smiley - cheers

Thanks for the info GTBacchus. I'm afraid I haven't heard either of those songs, but I'll definitely take a look at them just as soon as I can.

And thanks Rocketman, Bels, Jimster, Gosho, and Friar for reading the article and pointing out how to make it better! I really appreciate it.
