Think of it:
Somewhere in the Netherlands there must be cars running with:
HH-GG-42
HH-42-GG
42-HH-GG

Oh, you can have any arrangement of digits and letters on a Dutch license plate?

Not quit.
It is always a combination of pairs of letters and numbers, total 6.
It started in the fifties with XX-nn-nn, with most of the letters.
When those were all used, they started with nn-nn-XX and after that nn-XX-nn. Those were all the combinations with 2 letters and 4 numbers.
Then came the 4 letter 2 number combinations, starting with XX-XX-nn and XX-nn-XX. Now they are filling nn-XX-XX.
Not all the letters or combinations are used, no vowels so dirty words are impossible and no things like SS for historical reasons.

You cannot choose, when a new car is bought, you just get the next combination.

In Britain we'll have to wait until the first half of 2042 to get a 42 on the numberplate (unless you've got an old one of course). Hmmm, "HH 42 DNA" anyone?

There should be a departement 42 in France somewhere.
