This is a brilliant place to visit, particularly with children. Don't be surprised to see fully grown humans dressed in wierd garb, playing 'Dungeons and Dragons'!
Comments please.

Chislehurst caves - cool!
I've been there a few times, and I can't fault this entry. Wasn't there a photograph of a "ghost" in the visitors centre at one point?

I've not seen a photo of a ghost, Otto. All the tour guides mention the drowned lady. Apparently even in the Blitz, no-one would sleep near the pool and there are no 'pitches' nearby. However, as the pool was very deep (it's now been filled in, so it's much shallower), it was probably a hazard in its own right.
Have you been there, then?

Very nice! Sounds like a day trip I should make the next time I'm in London for a week (which happens every few months, it seems).
You might be able to use some of these links:

Also, what on Earth does 'des. res.' mean?
Great Entry!

Yeah, 'des. res.' was the only nit I had to pick. Try 'leafy suburb', maybe?
A great Entry indeed, with all mod. cons.

Zarquon's Singing Fish! Posted May 7, 2002
Hmm - 'des. res.' = estate agent speak for desirable residence. I did wonder when I put it in. It captured the feeling of nice houses, but *expensive*. I'll rethink on that one. It is a leafy suburb, but more a village. It's got a pond (not sure about ducks, though).
Thanks for the links, GTB. I'll check them out and add as appropriate.

I've included all the links - there were some really good ones. I knew there were links on most of them (I finished writing the entry at midnight), but I would never have found the one on the 1970s.
I searched in vain for one on children's parties!

Yes
I was implying from the previous post that it would be a good idea to have an entry on children's parties - probably a collaborative one.

Lovely Entry - absolutely fascinating! I have to admit that I'd never heard of the place before reading this, but it sounds wonderful, and it's certainly had an interesting history!
Just a few small imperfections:
The footnote about poor Caveina contradicts itself: 'She promptly changed her name to "Rose" later.' Either she did it promptly or she did it later, and unless she was a very precocious baby I imagine it was later! I'd suggest just dropping the 'promptly'. I wouldn't have thought that the quote marks around 'Rose' were necessary either.
The other imperfections are very tiny. In the 'Wartime Use' section, 'ventillation' should be 'ventilation'. In the 'Mushrooms, music and Doctor Who' section, 'accoustics' should be 'acoustics', and 'John Pertwee' should be 'Jon Pertwee'.
I look forward to seeing this on the front page!

Hi Ormy!
Thanks for the comments. I'll get on to them.
I think Caveina changed her name as soon as she was able to. I'll change it to make it clearer. She wouldn't have had the legal power before 21, would she?

Ormondroyd Posted May 15, 2002
I'm not sure, to tell you the truth, but I think she could have changed it earlier with her parents' permission. I have heard of whole families changing their surname. But just saying that she changed the name 'later' would be enough, I think!

I've made all the changes you suggested, including simply taking out the word 'promptly'.
They take all the lights away when the guide bangs the drum, but I haven't put it in the entry, as it would spoil the experience if anyone goes there as a result of reading it. Without lighting, you can't see your hand in front of your face!

One other small thing, ZSF: why not use the LINK H2G2 tag to link to other Entries? It doesn't matter hugely, but it does mean that you get a nice list of 'Referenced Entries' in the right-hand margin. The Editors would change that anyway, but you could save them a job!
In case you're not sure how to do it, full instructions can be found here: A184763 .

I'll have a look to see how it's done.
I see it's with a Sub Editor at the moment. Funny, I didn't get an e-mail which is the normal thing. So thanks, Galen.

This entry has just been put in the queue for the front page - and I especially liked the reference to the Doctor Who episode filmed there (I can't believe someone else knew which STORY it was!!).
Incidentally, major thanks to Zarquon's SF for inspiring a future topic of the week. On 14 August we'll be inviting people to collaborate on "Children's Parties", so thanks for recommending that as an idea!

Woohoo! Thanks. .
If you've never been to the caves, they are brilliant. Every time I've been down there, there's been a load of Dungeons and Dragons players hanging out. Can you imagine what it must have been like when there were five bands playing there simultaneously, as I'm told there was?
I'm pleased about the Children's Parties idea. Hopefully, I'll be one of the contributors.
