Do you? Re-reading the thread, I think she was asking me. No doubt, if I'm wrong, Amy will correct me.

Apologies - my stupidity. When I read the thread, somehow I thought the original question was from Peta; I guess my scroll wheel jumped a few lines and I didn't notice. My bad.

I was definitely asking ZSF and not Peta.
In the preferences of Outlook Express, is the printer font set to a font that is actually installed on your machine? Courier size 9 would be good. You'll find this information in the General section of the Preferences in the Edit Menu.
What happens if you select 'Page set up...' from the File Menu while you're in Outlook Express?

Ah! I may have found the answer. Hewlett Packard are claiming that OE up to version 4.5 does not support black and white printing. Upgrading to version 5 of OE fixes the problem.
Is that it?

Ooh!
I've got OE version 5.2. When I try to print, it says stuff about faxes, which I don't understand. I'm still in the dark here.

Oh what a shame . I thought we had it there.
What fax software do you have installed? Some fax software comes preinstalled or gets installed with other things. You may have to mount a careful search of your hard drive.

The more I think about this, the more I suspect Fax software. Faxstf has always been a problem for example and I wouldn't be surprised if FaxstfX was just as bad a previous versions. The answer to this will probably lie in the Print Center. You might want to consult the Help files of your Mac to find your way around the Print Center.

It's always been a bugbear for me. I installed a Virtual PC and it won't print from that either, even though I have and installation disc for the printer. When I go on to the Hewlett Packard website, the model I bought isn't there (and I only bought it last year!).
I'm not that good at finding my way round my hard drive yet.
Maybe I should phone the Apple helpline?

My Mac won't print from the dark side either but fortunately I don't use Virtual PC much these days.
I found a FAQs section for your model on the HP website. Try http://h20015.www2.hp.com/en/document.jhtml?lc=en&docName=c00000110&prodId=hpdeskjet388629&cc=us
The Apple helpline is expensive unless you have a service contract. Check the small print.
Are you able to find the Print Center in the Applications Menu?

ZSF, if you need a PC driver for your printer go to http://www.driverguide.com. When it asks you to log in:
Username = drivers
Password = all
I guess your Mac Fax software is trapping all calls to the printer; this is common behavior in both the Mac and PC world. Find and run the Fax software and look for an "Options" or "Preferences" panel, then uncheck anything that mentions "default printer" - that will usually restore the original printer settings.
