A Conversation for Talking Point: Do You Believe in Ghosts?

Ok, I'm throwing myself open to ridicule here. It's entirely up to you if you believe me or not, but before you say there's no such things as ghosts, just remember that it's no so long ago we thought the earth was flat and we were the centre of the universe...
When I was about 10 I was very afraid of the dark. Normal for kids, fair enough. I shared a room with my older brother, and always had to have the landing light on until he came to bed an hour or two after me. Prior to him coming to bed, I assumed the usual posture of hiding under the quilt with a small gap to breathe through...
One night I heard him come upstairs, and go into the bathroom. The landing light went out soon after, switched off from downstairs by my mum or dad. I waited a minute or two, but grew more afraid. I wanted the landing light on, so steeled my nerves, and braving the dark, went out to the landing. I flicked the switch - but nothing happened. I tried again, but realised that whoever had turned the light off from downstairs had only knocked the switch part way, which breaks the circuit, preventing me from turning it on at all.
Oh bum.
"Back to bed quick!" thinks, me, and I turned to go back into my room. I took 2 steps before bumping into somebody. Brain searches for explanation. Must be my brother.
"Oh, it's you!" says me.
"What?" said my brother, from in the bathroom.
Brain suddenly suggests I turn on the bedroom light, the switch is only a few paces away. I did so, and found myself alone on the landing.
Maybe, as someone else suggests, we are not very good at explaining things, but this is not "bunkum". This happened. I bumped into a person. It was not a solid object, like a wall or a door. It was not a wispy as seen in Scooby Doo. It was a person. Standing in my hallway. I may have been a scared little 10 year old with an active imagination, but my imagination does not extend as far as solid objects that stop you in your tracks...
I believe that some people are perhaps more "in tune" with other things... They say we only use a small amount of our brain, maybe 10%. I think I can sometimes sense something when others can't. Not often, just sometimes. I'm sure by now some people reading this are laughing, I accept it sounds far fetched. Some believe spirits are just our imaginaton. Some believe they are as real as us. Me? I'm sur there is something after death. If you don't believe me, ask the spirit that lives in one of the rooms where I work...

things happen here.
Do I believe in ....... that's a tricky one ....... I'm with you on this one Hoggy, I don't think we know half as much as we think we do - and that makes me smile.
BTW - what's that behind you.

I don't believe in "ghosts" that hang around with unfinished business but I do believe in spirits.
When my grandfather died, I was totally distraught for weeks afterwards. I would not sleep, I refused to eat my dinner often and I threw tantrums.
A few weeks after he died, I was sick with a cold and fever. Tossing and turning in bed and not getting any sleep. I felt the presence of someone sitting on the end of the bed, stroking my leg. I knew it has my grandfather straight away.
After that I made peace with his death because I knew although his body was gone, his spirit was still there. Even if not in "heaven" looking down, then somewhere very close by.
People think im nuts if I tell them this story and if it hadn't happened to me, I'd probably agree!

LittleD - I'm so glad you were able to find peace like that. I know what you mean about thinking people will think you're nuts - some will - but there are those of us who know you're not. In the end, you know what happened, and that's what matters!

Two extremely sensible hostelmates of mine had a pretty odd incident.
They were sharing a room, and had been staying there for years with no untoward incident. Our hostel didn't even have any of the old "built over a graveyard" stories.
One night, one of them woke up in the middle of the night, and in her words "felt a person next to her", like the person was staring right at her. She was terrified but willed herself to fall asleep. The next morning, her roommate wakes up and the FIRST thing she says is, "I had this really weird dream, like somebody was standing next to me."
Now, I've heard that hallucinations of a "presence" in the room are pretty common, but it must've been quite the coincidence for BOTH of them to hallucinate.
