I remembered. There was another one: People who's names are "Featheringsham- Hague" have their name pronounced "Fanshaw".

And "Bicester-Strachan" is supposed to be pronounced "Bister Strawn"... How is it possible...?
I made a fool of myself many times when I came to England the first time (on InterRail), and pronounced all the place names wrong. "You want a ticket to WHERE, love??!!"

I see how that's possible. Like "Leicester" is pronounced "Lester" so "Bicester" could be pronounced "Bister". English spelling is mucked up.

Oh, I like it! It's very entertaining. And the general way words are spelt in British English (as opposed to the American) looks more RIGHT, somehow...
But, then, this might have more to do with the fact that we learn "The Queen's English" in Scandinavian schools, than with the look of the words themselves...

I guess that means I learned someone else's english in school. I'm not sure whose it was, but they might want it back.

I don't speak the Queen's English. I can do the accent, and I suppose that I could if I wanted, but I don't. I speak my English.

I remember there were protests in the classroom when we learned that less than 2% (I think it was) of the English population really speaks it.
And, a couple of pupils who had been to England refused to use the books, because they gave a totally wrong picture of the English people. All the men on the illustrations wore bowler hats!

I haven't seen anyone wear a bowler hat /ever/. Except perhaps in a theatrical production. I seen top hats- at weddings, and I got one of those novelty ones. From Bergen, actually. Beautiful place.
Pip pip for now, old girl! I've got some other postings to concern myself with, doncha know old egg, from some rather splendid fellows. Cheerio!

At least you're not learning Cockney. /No- one/ understands that. I personally think they just make it up as they go along.
