Hi people! Que Pasa? Well, anyway, I decided to go ahead and recommend this entry of mine simply because I think it sums up a number of people's experience with various courts and such -- except that mine has a happy ending (for me, anyway), which is frequently not the case for other people. I wouldn't say that this entry is absolutely fantastic, but I do think it's worthy for the Peer Review, and besides, it was my first time going to court and I think it might help others with their first time 
. 
Or something, anyway.

Very interesting, and concurs with what little I know about the powers of a Sheriff in the USA. The quota thing isn't completely unknown in Germany too (although they *never* admit that there is such a thing).
Being requested to pass the detector twice could happen in Bavaria too. Dropping the case after the ticket had been filed... hmm... I'm not sure
Alas, I'd say this entry would better be suited for the http://www.bbc.co.uk/h2g2/guide/ThePost. Have you seen the AGG/GAG column there?

The powers of the sheriff vary by state, as to all powers of law enfrocement officers. I'm a county police officer in Georgia. I have the power of arrest within my jurisdcition, but I also have statewide powers of arrest for traffic offenses. Several of my other law enforcement powers also cross the county line. Additionally, I can always make a citizen's arrest.
In some states, all sworn officers can make an arrest anywehre in the state. The important issue in these cross jurisdictional issues is that the case goes before the proper court.

Ah, but the relevant bit here is that the guy wasn't a sheriff, he was a city marshal, pulling me over for a minor offense /outside/ of the city. Had he been a county sheriff, clearly he could have done whatever he wanted, but the Bayfield Marshals aren't even sheriffs... to the best of my knowledge, their authority and jurisdiction is actually extremely limited.
Whatever the case, it's a moot point because I GOT OFF!!!! WOOOO HOOOOO!!!!

It's hard to say what a marshal does from one place to another. We have several marshal's offices in the state of Georgia. Some of them serve civil provess. we have one that does commercial vehilce enforcement and park security.
