Clive the flying ostrich: Amateur Polymath | Chief Heretic.

But but but ... Ernie Hudson ... no you're right I can't defend it.

I watch Torchwood on fast-forward tbh, and then scroll back if it looks like something interesting happened and press play.

This series has reminded me why I'm so happy RTD's not running Dr Who anymore.

Hackneyed melodrama.

It's better when you watch them in a block together, the plot is actually quite well paced when you watch it that way. Designed for a Blu Ray box set release presumably (or for daily repeats on UK Gold). It's definitely slow when spread out one per week though.

Yes it looked like filler to me. Probably because it just focused on the camps ... no sign of Oswald Bailey ...

Do you get the impression it was a two-parter? Yes, the first half gave us some major plot points, but the second half had to resolve the immediate issues (Vera's murder and Gwen's dad) before we could move on the plot any further?

Two-parter within a nine-parter?

The only real plot points to come out of it were the people jumping off 45-storey buildings and "The Blessing" ...

There's a biblical theme developing ... Oswald talked about angels, then he had to say "the revelation" and now the blessing ...

I think Oswald's biblical language is meant to reflect a general Evangelistic tone. It's meant to be reminiscent of the American TV Evangelists, and it seems pretty clear to me that he's meant to be developing his following into something of a religious cult.
Hmm, a lot of "meant to"s in there. I think what I'm saying is that it's all written with a specific idea in mind.

Mr. Dreadful - But really I'm not actually your friend, but I am...

Why do the US episodes broadcast ahead of the UK ones when Torchwood is a BBC programme?

Presumably because it's also a Starz programme, and the deal is that they get to show it first?

I must admit it's been confusing me for weeks, Mr D. I come here and I can't any reference to the one I've just watched and have to wait until the Beeb have aired it.

It's not just BBC, it's a co-production. Interestingly, a lot of the names popping up in the credits are familiar to me from Joss Whedon projects: names like Kelly Manners and Skip Schoolink worked on Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Angel, Firefly and Dollhouse. I gather there's even some Torchwood material starring Eliza Dushku floating around somewhere.

D'you know, I'm quite liking their approach to making episodes self-contained, and yet fitting into an ongoing plot.
Also, what's with all the American sci-fi mainstays? Last week it was the guy from Ghostbusters, this week Kira from Star Trek: DS9, and next week Q from Star Trek: TNG...

I knew it - it's the Bajorans behind it all..

I enjoyed the Doctor and Trickster references. And that was the other episode which the BBC censored a few seconds from. It was nice to see Jack in a relationship without using his coat as a chat-up line.

Disappointed in the baddies, though. They're everywhere and can make the human race immortal, but can't be bothered to take Gwen's family out of their home when they kidnapp them.

It all feels cobbled together for my liking. Just introduce an important new character late in the series.

Has it been firmly established that Angelo and his cohort are (or are part of) the triangle people? I think it was pretty heavily hinted that the three guys who made the 'deal' by grabbing each others' forearms in a triangle shape while Jack was tied up are, but Angelo may yet turn out to be another side altogether. For that matter, which (if any) of them is responsible for the Miracle is still totally up in the air.
Btw what was the Trickster reference? Admittedly, I don't think I would have spotted it even if I'd known in advance.
