Mr Jack

It isn't a question of one series Vs another. It is about the ability to recognise that Voyerger suffer from terrible writing, hell ever Rick Berman has admitted as much and he produced the show.

Ah, so, it's the Autons. We have Spearhead from Space on DVD, and I think the Autons are awesomely scary! This ep sounds brilliant, and I am so glad to hear it was all it could be and more. smiley - ufo

GB - fancy saying that about the Doctor smiley - winkeyesmiley - drool

The sci-fi community should stop all this "that highly glossy well produced extremely expensive show" vs. Dr Who.

I'm really pleased to see that the new Who is using effects well, but it was never ever about effects - it was about characters. It's had some fab writers over the years and it shows.

Imagine being a Dr Who fan and getting to write scripts for the new series. That is like serious Fanfic!

It was great, and I only cried once.

Anyone who suggests the Autons were not scary has forgotten what it's like to be a child. A few weeks back, in preparation for the show coming, I sat down with my girlfriend's four year old son and watched "The Horror of Fang Rock" on DVD. The "monster" in that story was a plastic bag full of lime jelly with a light bulb in it. He hasn't slept properly since, he won't stay in a room on his own, and he cries if he needs to go to the toilet because it involves going up stairs. If you're a kid with imagination, you need very little to scare your pants off.

The Autons - specifically that first shop window dummy turning its head and the others in the cellar - were TERRIFYING. Yes, the business with the arm was comedy, but the boyfriend's rampage in the restaurant was awesome.

And Rose's first entrance to the TARDIS was handled so perfectly it made me well up smiley - wah.

Eccleston totally NAILED it, even in the first ten seconds, in a way I would not have believed possible. The speech beginning "It's like when you're a kid, and they tell you the world is turning", was an absolutely perfectly pitched bit of mysteriousness. And the whole Clive stuff was great. I was bracing myself at that point for Clive dragging out pictures of other Doctors, but wisely he was only aware of number nine and there were no offputting continuity sops to fans.

I have only one question... how did the Nestene Consciousness get hold of the TARDIS??? smiley - huh

I have to say I agree about terrifying children with a healthy inagination

Please don't laugh but my dad used to put a saucepan on his head and yell 'exterminate' and that was guarnteed to have me quivering under my bed with fight, I was only 5 at the time

For those that want to have a Star Trek v Dr Who try A2529488 it's the ST Appreciation Society

I saw that for the first time in the '90s, and it is perhaps the darkest and most sadly futile story in the whole Dr Who canon. Miserable and adult!

I agree, Hoo, Rose's reaction to the Tardis was brilliant. Backing straight back out to check the dimensions - perfect reaction!

And Christopher Ecclestone works so well as the Doctor. With the added eye candy advantage smiley - drool

Deb smiley - cheerup

What arguement Voyager was just a soap in space.smiley - grr
Dr Who is Sci-fi at its best.
Last nights episode showed a lot of promise.
It's good its aimed at kids as well as old fans ~ we need a new generation of sci-fi addicts.
Anyway i'll watch Eccleston in anythingsmiley - drool

"The plastic bin *was* meant to be funny (hence the comedy burp) because there's no other way you can do it."
Ther writer of that bit said that part of his aim was to recreate the when ordinary things turn nasty scare for kids, but also so that on monday morning when the kids are out and about the streets will be lined with wheelie bins...he has got a nasty turn of mind hasn't he?
But yeah, sfx was there where needed. The autons were blokes in funny outfits, how could that not be in it?
But yes, me liked it, and thanks to whoever posted here just before it was on! I soooo nearly was late for it! Thankyou!
Looking forward to the next one, that's for sure.

I have to admit I prefered Voyager to the other incarnations of Star Trek

Whoever said that Voyager was a missed opportunity was quite right... It could have been (like Enterprise) so much better than it was.

In the end it was just annoying. smiley - ufo

Not half as annoying as the final episode of X Files, that was REALLY disappointing

We did the same with X Files, giving up towards the end. (Mind you, constant schedule changes onthe part of the TV channel showing it didn't help either...)

It got extremely silly in Season 7 when David Duchovny took himself too seriously, but it picked up when Robert Patrick joined at the start of season 8 and Annabeth Gish in the latter half, it's a shame they didn't give them a chance to see what they could have done with their characters

Yes, we did see some of those episodes. Robert Patrick was great, as was Annabeth Gish. (Does anyone know if she is related to Lillian, BTW?)

Mol - on the new tablet

Wooo-whooooo! We all really enjoyed it last night, stroke of genius making the ordinary wheelie bin an object of terror, thought Billie Piper was actually rather good, had to hide behind the sofa at least once ... it was wonderful and the kids enjoyed it too. Although afterwards I had to do some quick thinking to explain why all our wheelie bins wouldn't be coming alive (the signal wasn't strong enough to reach us from London was the explanation I went for - they weren't happy with the fact that the Doctor had saved the world "because it wasn't him, it was Rose, wasn't it?").

Also some concern from my daughter that Rose's mum had (a) dropped her shopping and (b) didn't know where her daughter was. The loss of the shopping particularly bothered her.

One moment of anorak excitement, when I thought that Clive's wife was Nyssa and that the internet had enabled all those people on Earth who had worked with the Doctor to get in touch with each other. Can't remember where Nyssa ended up (probably not on Earth actually) but quite a few former companions must be alive on Earth today and I thought this was a terribly exciting idea ... which it is, but not part of the story this week, at any rate. I suppose it would be too difficult to work out in a way which would meet all the continuity requirements.

Anyway ... how many hours until episode 2?

Mol
