Chris Chibnall, the writer of '42' has said that it's a deliberate nod to Douglas. I knew Chris when we were both teenagers - lovely chap.

Dunno Xanatic.
But may I just say - WOW. That episode was pretty good I have to say. It wasn't rushed at all. It moved at a good pace and it's always good to see the Daleks!
The end was pretty....lets just say my mouth dropped open!

ahh...erm... how to say?
Human Dalek = Not Scary.
and no EVIL, HECTORING VOICE either.
It was the same problem With Alien Resurrection, if you'll forgive the tangent, give the devil eyes and recognisable features and suddenly the mystery and the threat is just sapped.
Now Daleks hovering over Central Park and going EXTERMINATE is more like it, but I worry if this is a misstep. I hope I'm proven wrong.

For me the dalek-human thing was slightly ruined by being on the front of the Radio Times which I happened to see in a shop this afternoon
Having seen it, I decided there was nothing to stop me buying it and getting my free DW stickers
I do wonder what the writers have about pigs though, 'cos as I understand it the ones today had nothing to do with the dude who was made to crash the craft into the Thames in series one.
Episode-wise I'll wait to see the second half but not personally a favourite so far...

we really liked this latest episode, best so far...i loved all the running around the sewer tunnels, seeing the unmisstakable shadow of the dalek before it comes round the corner and doctor and friend hiding in a dark recess.. ohh thats the stuff
so with this human dalek merger thing.. could this be davros?? why haven't we ever seen him again.. he was fairly humanoid [ish]
the pig thing does puzzle me.. i think it would be better if they left tham at the half way stage of the showgirls boyfriend, rather than go for the full pig look.. he looked much more freaky.. reminded me of mark wahlberg... i don't know why!!
so yes this is doctor who at its best.. and not cramming it all into one episode..

I thought this episode was really disappointing
Tallulah's accent was naff
Soloman/Bloke from Casualty City looked really out of place as the Hardman/peacemaker in Hooverville
The Pigs were ok in the Slitheen ep in series 1 but they seemed out of place too, although I did like the way Lazlou was still Lazlou and Tallulah didn't run away screaming, that was a nice touch.
Black-suit-soprano-bloke, talk about laying on mafia stereotypes with a trowel, although he had a very strong resemblence to Excelsior's brother
I really hope next weeks ep is better, but I'm not holding my breath

Gonna go with that. Wasn't a bad one as such, just that the thought of 'Daleks in Manhattan' was quite a lot more exciting than the episode turned out to be. Potential for tension from getting lost/hunted/hiding in the sewers was really missed IMO.

Seconded.
Remember the Last time we saw the Daleks? hundreds, thousands of them getting sucked into the Void (they are still there btw..), and the black Dalek screaming "EMERGENCY TEMPORAL SHIFT and vanishing - well that could have had so many possibilities: where did it go, was it planned or by accident - what could one (or indeed four) Dalek(s) accomplish. Intriguing stuff.
To find them in 1930's Manhattan is itself something of a small let down (Is that the best they could think of?) - and I agree with Bouncy that accepting that this is what they writers came up with, the sewers and pigs seems ...well a little half-baked. (let's hope the 2nd part redeems it but I dunno... )

The human-dalek hybrid reminded me of the Jagaroth (sp?) from 'City of Death' (Doctor and Romana in Paris with multiple copies of the Mona Lisa and the reference to how the Doctor helped Shakespeare with writing 'Hamlet').
I enjoyed the episode. The pigs didn't bother me. Given we (humanity) have decided that you can use pig organs in transplants, then wouldn't they be an ideal option for transugenic (sp?) merging experiments? I mean, if you did it with humans and chimps, you just end up with an Ogron-a-like (also a Dalek servitor races, if I recall correctly).
Looking forward to seeing what the Daleks intend to use the transmitter to communicate...

Liked the Phantom references. At least I assumed that's what they were as they made me think of Pratchetts Maskerade.
Also, Hugh Quarshie! Terribly handsome in that costume, shame the American accent made his voice less growly.

I enjoyed the episode right up until Dr. Zoidberg, sorry, the Human-Dalek Hybrid appeared... what a naff idea. I hope it gets exterminated.

I wouldn't go so far as to call it a naff idea. Davros always seemed to enjoy his role in providing a less mechanical/logical perspective in assisting in the supremacy of his creations. When the Daleks hit stalemate with the Movellons (sp?), they rolled out the old creator in an attempt to give them the edge. The Cult of Skaro clearly recognise that as mighty as the Daleks might be, they still lost the Time War (yeah, I know the Time Lords did too!) and need something more to ensure their survival. The creativity of the 'human factor' could well present them with that opportunity.
Physically, I found the hybrid more effective than Scaroth, last of the Jagaroth; but, Scaroth was still 'scary' to a little kids watching 'City of Death' when originally braodcast (scared me - though not as much as the Nimon for some reason!).

Didn't see it till yesterday. Not bad I didn;t think to be honest. Scene setting really though.
I'm beginning to get the idea though that in order to speak like an alien all you need do is stress the final sylable in the word instead of any others. I.e daLEK docTOR etc.
