A Conversation for h2g2 Smiley Ideas List

Why oh why is there still no smiley representing the Sikh community? I feel that this is discriminatory and offensive. Sikhs use t'internet too you know and I feel that h2g2 is carrying a dangerously low turban count in its picture content.
And whilst I'm on the subject how's about a contemplative Rabbi smiley?
If someone would sort this out I would be extremely grateful, otherwise I will have no alternative but to contact the CRE and report the moderators for discriminatory behaviour.

I notice a Baby Jesus seasonal smiley on the list. What about Vishnu and Ganesh? Mohammed? Buddha? Come on. Sort it out!

Thanks for pointing that out. These smileys are all suggested by members of the community, and not having a sikh smiley just means noone has asked for one (until now).

Does that mean someone is going to add it to the list? I had a little look and all I could see was sigh and that isn't the same as Sikh.
I woulld very much be appreciable if I was to see it added to the l;ist or in pictorial form. I don't wish to contact the CRE.

in order to get a smiley, you have to ask for one. simple as that. You can't complain that no one wanted to use one before now and hasn't asked...
I'm a Christian, and personally I don't like that the 'Baby Jesus' smiley is on the list, because I feel that it cheapens the imagery of Christianity.
I don't know, but I'm doubtful (and if anyone here is muslim, please feel free to correct me) that the Islamic community would be terribly in favour of a Mohammed smiley, either.
As far as racial equality goes, maybe I should complain that all the smileys are yellow. At the end of the day, the lack of a Sikh smiley isn't really going to have too bad of an effect on people, and I think it would waste taxpayers money to have to have the CRE look into smileys on h2g2! However, the fact that due to the colour of my skin I have to apply on average for twice as many jobs in order to get employed as a white counterpart is, I feel, worth the CRE looking into.

Whatever.
Are we going to be getting a Sikh smiley soon or does H2G2 only represent and welcome Christianity and atheism?

I believe the smileys of a Sikh gentleman, resplendent in his turban coupled with those of vishnu and ganesh would surely entice a broader spectrum of visitors.
I know from my friends that they are slightly perturbed by their noteable absence and feel that this is a meeting place for the Christian faith only.

I'm not sure that you've explored h2g2 to its fullest. We have members of all sorts of religions here.

Sure I have explored it, I just feel the lack of symbolism promoting ALL faiths is a disturbing sign as to the overriding ethic behind H2G2.

Excuse me? Not sure quite what you are talking about? I am merely making a suggestion that I feel would make H2G2 a more inclusive site for all faiths to explore, I'm sorry if you disagree with my idea but you are welcome to your opinion after-all this is a discussion!

Actually, last time I looked, there wasn't a smiley for any faith, unless you worship s or something....

Fish? You worship fish?
On the list, but not actually a smiley. Since smileys only come out once in a blue moon, it'll be a long time, if ever the Jesus smiley appears.

Oh I don't know, the smiley sums up my religion very nicely. There's also a for the satanists among us.
I was feeling a little reluctant about this one, simply because we're not keen on Researchers trying to blackmail us.

Have you never seen the symbols in the backs of cars? I can't remember the exact reason (something to do with hebrew translation I believe) but it represents the image of Christ.

Rt. Rev. Lesley Gentle Posted Nov 21, 2002
That's thoroughly offensive Mina! Blackmail? Moi? I am merely pointing out your visible record of equality isn't that sh*t-hot.
I'm disappointed that you seem to harbour some sort of prejudice against Sikhs and Sikhism and feel that your unwillingness to support these ideas is symptomatic of the general malaise around here.

A stylised fish symbol is the old symbol for love, and was used as sign by Christians of the Roman era, when they were trying to avoid being lunch for large felines. But it isn't really a fish, and certainly doesn't look like a h2g2 fish.
I take your point Mina, but aren't they suggested to be stereotypical icons, rather than represent religion?
Worryingly, I think the smiley is the one I use the most

It's not the same fish. The fact is, smileys are added to h2g2 in a particular way. You've suggested some Sikh smileys, and I don't disagree with that as such - although I'm not sure religious smileys are necessarily a great idea - they'd all have to be done at once or there might be grumbles.
Smileys are added to the list when a suggestion has been accepted. That doesn't meen that they'll be made anytime soon, and your suggestion is no different.
So you might consider allowing the decision of whether or not it should be added to be made, without pressurising people and forcing them to argue with you. That's not in the spirit of h2g2...
