Pleased to be able to be seen smiley - applause-ing
this historic event down here at the bottom
of the very first page of what will likely be
not the last thread of self congratulatory hootoo
celebrations. WE DID IT! (Even if some us were only
able to sit back and watch with fingers crossed
or shake and rattle our worry-beads.)

>>In the next month, we hope to provide you with a link to the new H2G2 url<<

"HOPE"?! Am I the only one to notice?

smiley - erm

If the BBC shut down the current site in a month and the "new H2G2 url" is posted on the H2G2 site after that, how will anyone find it? It will be a, no doubt fantastic, site that is only linked to from itself!

But I'm sure that won't happen... Everyone gets left behind?

smiley - wah

Merely a number

Even if that did happen I'm sure the new site would issue an invitation. Why else would they be in receipt of the encoded email address of every researcher?

Gnomon - time to move on

The new url will almost definitely be www.h2g2.com. In the next month, we hope that this will actually bring you to somewhere worth going to.

"we hope that this will actually bring you to somewhere worth going to."

As opposed to where it takes you now, you mean? Cause that site is rubbish and full of horrid people and poor writing. smiley - tongueincheek

*Technically* it won't though. It'll be the same site, just with a different login script and URL.

Anyway I had been aiming at humour, but apparently missed.

So it probably won't be h2g2.com because that is owned by the BBC? Did the BBC sign to say they would give up that domain name or not? I suspect not because of the use of the word 'probably'...

smiley - tea

Mrs Zen

It's owned by Jim Lynn, who built the site before it was owned by the BBC. He's quietly maintained the registration for all these years and pointed it at the BBC's servers. He has agreed with Robbie to point it at the new site.
